Here, everyone matters and you will be a vital contributor to our inspiring, bold mission.As a Head of R&D Cloud Services working on the R&D Management Systems team, a typical day will include:


  • Manages a global group of employees, vendors, consultants and/or contractors to effect solutions associated within one or more areas of responsibility.

  • With senior manager input formulates strategic plans for managing employees, vendors, consultants and contractors for one or more departments.


  • Reports to GlobalHead of R&D Management Systems, R&D IS/IT

  • Meets theobjectives and fulfils the accountabilities of the Manager 3/4 position.

  • Provides leadership on Cloud and Services and aligns these within IS/IT and R&D; works with IT management to develop and direct the strategic vision for R&D cloud services that is: aligned to the overall vision and strategy for R&D; supports key R&D sponsored initiatives; meets the specialized data management needs of a scientific and medical research environment.

  • Develops and manages a distributed governance, development and support model that enables R&D IT and Informatics staff and associated providers to develop and maintain R&D IT platforms and systems.

  • Collaborates with the Technical Architecture team in IT/IO and platform architects in EAS to ensure that the specialized IT needs of R&D are met while leveraging common technical and infrastructure standards (e.g. security, network, IAM, etc.).

  • Leads critical initiatives to establish and leverage R&D-specific cloud infrastructure and services in areas such as hybrid cloud computing, high-volume data transfers, and scientific collaboration with external partners. Owns and is responsible for the outcomes of these initiatives.

  • Manages internal and external staff to architect, design, and operate cloud services. Initially AWS will be utilized as the preferred cloud services platform with possible extension to other providers in the future.

  • Contributes to the development of the overall R&D IT roadmap with a special focus on enabling technical capabilities that can scale to meet the needs of a global R&D organization increasingly focused on innovation, collaboration, and externalization.

  • Works independently with guidance and alignment in only the most business critical strategic situations. Uses persuasion and some negotiation to reach agreement with internal and external parties.



  • Excellent skills in building multi-cultural relationships via strong collaboration and communication skills.

  • Experience architecting, designing, and managing the cloud infrastructure and services to support a dynamic R&D organization.

  • Extensive knowledge of cloud-based technologies, including commodity offerings (e.g. AWS) and industry-specific solutions (e.g. DNA Nexus).

  • Experience developing specialized storage and HPC environments capable of scaling to meet growing R&D demands for both storage and analytics.

  • Has a strong commercial awareness.


  • Experience supporting global business functions and implementing global and/or large, complex applications.

  • Working understanding of pharmaceutical R&D processes.

  • Knowledge of core networking principles and practices to establish connectivity with on premise infrastructure and with other cloud providers.

  • Experience withsystem validation processes.
