State of Massachusetts Quality Assurance Lead Engineer in Boston, Massachusetts

The Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development (EOHED) is the administrative office that oversees housing and community development, business development, consumer affairs, and business regulation.

Job Description:

The IT Department within the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development is seeking a hands-on QA Lead Engineer to show off their passion and expertise for software, systems and their solid testing skills. The right candidate will demonstrate test automation to debug and test internally developed software (web application) products and off-the-shelf systems through the use of systematic functional, regression and performance tests to develop, apply, and maintain quality standards for the Secretariat agencies.

The QA Lead Engineer selected for this role will also work with IT management to improve the application development processes and practices associated with continuously building, deploying, and updating software and environments. The person will assist with defining strategy, create test plans and use case scenarios, as well optimize release management.

Responsibilities:

QA:

  • Lead the QA function and provide quality assurance assistance to the application development group by assisting with a strategy to increase quality assurance of product deliverables.

  • Create and maintain test plans for scalability, security, functionality, and usability for successful code deployments.

  • Automate tests where appropriate.

  • Test software application through both manual and automated means.

  • Implement, execute and capture results of test plans/test scripts/test cases.

  • Produce and prioritize bug reports.

  • Work with business analysts and developers to address issues and test resolutions.

  • Lead regression and smoke testing efforts.

  • Provide data quality analysis as needed.

Build and Release Management:

  • Produce application deployment and implementation plans.

  • Negotiate, plan, and manage all release activities including readiness reviews.

  • Collaborate closely with Business Analyst and Project Manager to ensure that all project deliverables are appropriately verified, and approved for distribution by Product owner.

  • Work with Release Engineer (Developer) to understand impacts of branches and code merges.

  • Lead and coordinate the Go-Live activities including the execution of the deployment plans and checklists.

  • Develop scripts and automation tools used to build, integrate, and deploy software releases to various platforms.

  • Maintain a release repository and manage key information such as build and release procedures, dependencies, and notification lists.

  • Create and maintain automated build definitions for Visual Studio applications.

The ideal candidate will possess the following Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years of IT experience across the various facets of the SDLC process with a specific focus on QA strategy, execution, build and release management.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related discipline or equivalent work experience and technical training is required.

  • Experience developing overall test strategy and plans for complex system implementations including a variety of technologies and design patterns.

  • Strong experience in Agile QA and Scrum methodologies.

  • Hands on capabilities with QA automation (Microsoft Test Manager, Selenium, or similar) and bug/defect tracking systems.

  • Experience with GUI driven testing.

  • Strong analysis and problem discovery and solving skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required to document and communicate defects and other software issues.

  • Solid understanding of version control, release processes, and deployment management.

  • Solid teamwork and interpersonal skills. Ability to work well on cross-functional project teams and foster team commitment to tasks.
