Job Description

As a technical leader of the System Architecture engineering discipline, the candidate will have a number of critical responsibilities including management, technical leadership, portfolio development, and hands-on engineering. As functional manager for the engineering discipline, the candidate will manage a team of 5-15 engineers of a single engineering discipline supporting a range of programs and projects. Management responsibilities will include performance reviews, project staffing, recruiting, staff development, and capability maintenance (workshop space, software tools, etc), as well as review of technical work performed by their team and others as it relates to the specific engineering discipline.

The candidate will also be required to contribute to and lead engineering tasks on one or multiple projects. They should have a firm grasp of every element in technical product development as it relates to their engineering discipline, including concept ideation, design, analysis (modeling and simulation), prototyping, test/verification, and design transition to manufacturing partners. Strong technical leadership skills will be critical. The candidate must be capable of working well in multi-disciplinary teams consisting of mechanical, electrical, software, test, and systems engineers. Familiarity with these other disciplines is beneficial. System thinking and technical business valuation expertise are highly valuable in this role due to the nature of programs and projects.

In addition, the candidate will be expected to work with stakeholders (internal and external to Shell), vendors in the supply chain, subcontractors, engineering teams, and end users to identify problems and propose valid technical solutions. This will include working closely with the portfolio development managers, program managers and product owners to produce technical proposals with associated cost and schedule projections. The candidate will be expected to contribute to Shell Tech Works engineering organizational strategy and planning, setting a vision for success that is compelling to drive the candidate’s team to high efficiencies. The candidate will also be responsible for ensuring a healthy, safe, secure and environmentally conscious work environment is maintained at all times and by all staff, in compliance with corporate policies and federal and state regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related discipline, Master's degree preferred

  • Ability to lead technical teams with varying backgrounds and skill sets

  • Experience managing multiple direct reports

  • Experience setting up process workflows and best practices

  • Minimum Ten (10+) years experience developing complex technical systems

  • Ability to quickly identify problems and implement innovative solutions in an Agile environment

  • Ability to balance technical execution with schedule and budgetary constraints

  • Ability to drive projects to completion despite technical and programmatic adversity

  • Ability to create and give well-received, persuasive presentations and oral arguments in all settings

  • Ability to effectively shape group dynamics and produce desired work product

Application of analytical tools to enhance and optimize designs

Experience fulfilling a key technical leadership role on large scale engineering projects, being directly responsible for technical leadership on projects larger than $10 million dollars. Candidate should have a proven record in bringing those projects to full completion as a deployed technology solution/product

Experience working within 2 distinct industries, with a demonstrated ability to rapidly and effectively transition to working with new technologies and in different working environments, including small company or start-up environments.

Has preexisting relationships with key industry leaders

Experience delivering feedback and providing mentorship on oral communication to engineers, analysts and portfolio development managers

Ability to clearly sets stakeholder and team expectations
