Duties & Responsibilities The mission of the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University is to transform human healthcare and the environment by emulating the way nature builds. Developed as an alliance between Harvard and other premier academic and clinical partner institutions, Institute faculty and staff collaborate in high-risk, fundamental research and science-driven technology development. The Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University seeks an experienced software engineer to aid our computational design team in the Synthetic Biology platform. You will work closely with our researchers, including faculty, staff scientists, engineers, post-docs and graduate students, to author and adapt in-house software libraries, existing life science software and machine learning tools to create pipelines that support our research and advance the state of the art in experimental design. Areas of focus include protein design, gene synthesis, genome editing and next-gen sequencing.
The candidate must be able to quickly learn and adapt new data science and deep learning models that platform members are implementing. The candidate must write clean, documented code in appropriate scripting and compiled languages, and establish administration of packages developed. The candidate must also be willing to learn relevant biological fundamentals to better anticipate platform design needs and participate in ongoing research.
The candidate will write research proposals, reports, patent applications, presentations and publications, providing critical data, figures or information for grant and patent submissions. Additionally, the candidate will work with members of the platform to establish and manage external collaborations in pursuit of the Institute’s entrepreneurial mission. The candidate will also mentor and contribute to the Wyss Institute culture of community and collaboration.
Basic Qualifications A bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science or Engineering
3 years of Industry experience in software design, Master’s degree may count toward experience
Experience with remote Linux or BSD administration
Strong knowledge of Python
Strong knowledge of modern C++ or similar
Cloud systems architecture (e.g. AWS) including compute, storage and micro-services and shell scripting
Strong foundation in statistics
Proficiency in R
Custom data visualization design
Background in Life Sciences
