Additional Qualifications:Experience working in a laboratory environment is a plus. Experience with the following is preferred: microcontroller programming and experience with the Arduino environment; circuit design including sensors, op-amps, transistors, and PCB layout; computer vision; controls theory; signal processing, both analog and digital; instrumentation including oscilloscopes, multimeters, and soldering.Competency in the following is also preferred: C or C++; hardware description languages such as Verilog; SPICE; MATLAB; PCB CAD packages; circuit simulation such as Cadence, Mentor, Synopsys, etc.; scripting language such as Python, Perl, Tcl; FEM/FEA.Competency in computer-aided design, manufacturing and data acquisition hardware and software such as SolidWorks, COMSOL, and LabVIEW is also preferred.Strong organizational skills, creativity, motivation, and the ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing are essential. For more information about us, please visit www.seas.harvard.edu.Department:SEASPre-Employment Screening:Education, IdentityJob Function:Technical Duties & Responsibilities:This position is designed to enrich and broaden the intellectual landscape in the area of hands-on learning in the Instructional Labs at SEAS. Activities will involve working with faculty and lab staff to develop and implement new course lab components, training students and teaching fellows in the use of good laboratory, design, and manufacturing practices, and assisting students with fabrication for their design projects. The candidate selected will aslo work with and advise individual students as well as teams of undergraduates. The candidate should be available some nights and weekends when needed or requested by students.Typical Duties & Responsibilities:• Assisting and advising students working on senior design projects (ES100) and junior design projects (ES96).• Engaging with SEAS faculty to assess and implement new design activities in multiple courses throughout the SEAS curriculum especially where they synergize with and reinforce existing course objectives.• Enhancing current design activities in existing courses and developing concrete plans of improvement of ongoing activities.• Broadening design activities beyond our current courses through establishing and supporting design workshops and related hardware, software, and programming training.• Mentoring extracurricular design projects and strengthening SEAS engagement in design competitions.• Preparing and maintaining lab facilities for audits, inspections, and tours.• Participating in and leading lab audits, inspections, and tours.• Regular daily inspection of the computer labs to ensure all software and hardware is fully functional and ready for the day’s activities.• Troubleshooting and technical support for the software and hardware in the computer labs.• Regular daily inspection of all lab facilities to ensure a clean and safe learning environment.• Publishing and updating Standard Operating Procedures for all lab equipment.• Working with the Director of the SEAS Safety Program and the Harvard Environmental Health and Safety department to help ensure a safe laboratory environment.This position will include a concurrent unpaid dependent lectureship.THERE IS A STRONG INTERNAL CANDIDATE FOR THIS POSITION.NOTE: This is a one year Term appointment.
