Summary of Position

The Server, Storage and Backup Svc Team Lead is responsible managing a team responsible for supporting the central Server and Virtual Infrastructure, storage platforms, backup services and infrastructure applications in a scalable, resilient and highly secure configuration. The team researches, designs, implements and supports process and technologies which support the teams core services. The Team Lead provides strategy and guidance to the team members as well as resource management functions to ensure proper levels of support for all services. The Team Lead also acts as a voice of the central IT department. The Team Lead works with the Laboratory community to communicate services and also understand and anticipate business needs.

Primary Duties:

  1. Server, Storage and Backup Svc Team Management
  • Ensures continuity of operational support for all services provided by team. This currently consists of the Windows Server, Unix (Linux/Solaris) Server, Central Storage (EMC/Netapp) and Legato Backup systems. Also support for various internal or laboratory applications.

  • Responsible for the development of monitoring and reporting standards for the services provided

  • Responsible for documenting the necessary standards and operational processes required of each system

  • As required, design, implementation and testing of disaster recovery solutions for supported systems

  • Project management for operations project. This includes establishing goals, measurable milestones, financial requirements and service engineering plans. This involves the development of all necessary project-related materials including project plans, requirements, design and configuration documentation, training material and necessary project controls

  • Implements organizational practices for staffing; Performance planning and development; coaching and mentoring; staff development for a continuous improvement culture.

  • Provide advice, guidance, encouragement, and constructive feedback to direct reports.

  • Ensures communication of workflow, information, ideas, and technology.

  • Fosters a committed team by embodying the Department Values.

  1. Business Planning
  • Establishes and drives measurable team and individual goals that are aligned with Department and Laboratory goals to effectively enable the Department and Laboratory missions.

  • Researches new technologies, products and services that can improve the suite of services.

  • Helps develop strategy and direction for services portfolio.

  1. Vendor Management
  • Manages vendors to the responsibilities outlined in their service agreements.

  • Measures the quality and timeliness of vendor services being delivered

  • Manages the communication channels between operations and vendor

  • Maintains professional relationships with strategic vendors and/or VAR's as a mechanism to provide the ability to maintain current with technology trends and influence pricing discounts for Laboratory initiatives.

  • This position is under direction of the ISD I&O Sector Manager.

Persons reporting directly (D) and indirectly (I) through subordinate supervisors to this position.

Financial Responsibilities:

This position has fiscal responsibility for managing the Server Storage and Backup Svc Team’s , infrastructure and related expenses, to the spend outlined in the sector budget.

Contacts:

This position will maintain frequent contact with internal department and/or Laboratory user community as well as external vendors and peer FFRDC organizations to maintain communications related to problem resolution, systems upgrades, services and product research.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s of Computer Science, Engineering, or Information Technology or equivalent relevant work experience.

  • 10+ years of industry or related hands-on experience.

  • Ability to work independently toward delivery of goals as well as collaborate in team efforts

  • In-depth Experience in the installation, upgrade, configuration, monitoring, troubleshooting, and security of Windows 2003, 2008, 2008 R2 servers including the Enterprise versions.

  • In-depth experience with Virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper-V, etc)

  • Experience with or working knowledge of Active Directory, specifically replication, security, group policy, schema, and domain administration is a plus.

  • Experience with TCP / IP, FTP, DHCP, DNS, WINS, and LDAP.

  • Ability to work independently toward delivery of goals as well as collaborate in team efforts

  • Ability to work analytically in a problem-solving environment

  • Skills in interviewing users and indentifying their business and technical requirements

  • Skill in building consensus among stakeholders and colleagues

  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Knowledge of industry best practices related to server administration, monitoring, storage, backup, high availability, and disaster recovery.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance.

  • Occasional off-hour/on-call support is necessary. A certain degree of flexibility of schedule is required as some work (planned/unplanned) must be done outside of major production hours during pre-scheduled maintenance windows.

Preferred:

  • Skill in organizing and managing projects and priorities

  • Working knowledge of Linux

  • ITIL Foundations Certification

  • Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer Certification
