Become a valuable team member of a versatile database team supporting the application development and production deployment of our expanding set of SaaS products. This team supports multiple database products and environments for UpToDate’s applications.

The Environment

•Production. Distributed application with Oracle running at our Central data center and replicated Oracle data at our five globally distributed Web Farms. Persistent data updates are seamlessly available to the application users.

•Development/Test regions. Multiple instances of the distributed application supporting Production patching, Performance Testing, Functional Testing, and various ongoing development streams.

•High volume system tracked and supported by database technology. Approximately 5,000 system transactions per minute. Approximately 350,000 million clinician topic views per year. Over 1M subscribers in 170+ countries.

•Next generation complimentary products at early stage. Opportunity to shape the architecture and optimize the performance.

•Oracle integrated with Enterprise Business Systems.

•NoSQL database technologies integrated with Oracle in next generation products.



•Collaborate with Database Administration team to support all environments and technologies

•Collaborate with the Database Engineers/Development Teams to review schema and database changes to ensure the performance and availability of the production environment.

•Collaborate with the release engineers to implement complex database changes in support of the application deployment.

•Collaborate with data architect to consider and advocate for architectural and technology changes, considering product roadmap and timing implications

•When needed, work on a project independently, creating documentation to enable full team support.

•Agile methodology employed at strategic and tactical level enables collaboration of Product roadmap and infrastructure enhancements


•Administer, optimize, and support Install, patch and maintain all Oracle Software to help develop a Patch Management and Version Control process.

•Perform Database backups and copy using RMAN.

•Perform tasks using PL/SQL, Data Pump and SQLLOADER.

•Implement and maintain database security (create and maintain users and roles, assign privileges).

•Linux Shell Scripting.

•Work as part of a team and provide 24x7 support.

•Work Issues with Materialized View Replication and scheduling. Learn non-Oracle replication tolls such as SymmetricsDS.

•Support the NoSQL database environments using CouchBase; XDCR, Cluster failover and configuration. Upgrade Software as needed.


•Assumes other duties as assigned by supervisor.


Education: Bachelor or Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Computer Science, Information Management or related field.


•Must have 7-10 years of demonstrating solid Oracle Database Administrator skills in a RAC environment with Replication to multiple RAC Databases.

•Experience with Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) and performance Packs. Experience setting up agents on remote sites and configuring alerts and notifications.

•Experience tuning all Oracle instance components including SQL and PL/SQL. Knowledge of Oracle RAC, Edition Based Redefinition and the performance and maintenance issues that are required for the environment.

•Knowledge of Oracle Failover and Disaster Recovery with Data Guard.

•Experience setting up backups executing RMAN backups using Third party tape mgt systems.

•Must have 7-10 years of experience with Unix/Linux knowledge including Shell scripting.

•5 years of experience with Data Warehousing with multiple terabyte databases.

•Knowledge of SQL Server, MySql, Couchbase and Mongo a plus, including backups and master-master replication.

•Experience with various Oracle replication architectures and tools


•Demonstrated expertise with patching and upgrading Oracle DBMS and Grid Infrastructure.

•Excellent written and verbal communication skills

•Ability to manage multiple tasks on database projects and move them to completion.

•Must be a self-starter and act proactively in a fast paced complex environment.

•Exceptional troubleshooting and analytical problem-solving skills.

•Willingness to learn new Oracle (and other) technologies.

•Management experience a plus.
