Aetnas Clinical Analytics team conducts analyses and develops technologies to improve the health of its members. The position will lead the development of cutting edge machine learning techniques and advanced analytics to help our members achieve better health and lower their costs. We are currently looking for a Principal Data Scientist who shares our passion for artificial intelligence algorithms and healthcare data.

Fundamental Components:

The group uses an industry leading, scalable data platform and tools to glean insights from Aetnas large array of data sources, including medical claims, prescriptions, and surveys. You would be part of a new and expanding team, interacting with project stakeholders at all levels of the organization. From these insights and understanding of the business needs, you would oversee analysis of complex and heterogeneous data sets to deliver actionable insights and development statistical predictive models. . You would put together analysis plans, develop mathematical approaches, and apply statistical evaluations. You would promote rigor in applying statistical methods to analyze large amounts of data. As a thought leader, you would consult and advise on additional efforts across organization/enterprise. The work environment is fast-paced, collaborative, and iterative, requiring quick learning, adaptability, and creativity

Collaborates with business partners to define project requirements.

Leads development and execution of new and/or highly complex algorithms and statistical predictive models and determines analytical approaches and modeling techniques to evaluate scenarios and potential future outcomes

Delivers actionable intelligence from large volumes of data in various formats.

Anticipates and solves strategic and high risk business problems with broad impact on the business area by applying leading-edge theories and techniques to investigate problems, detect patterns and recommend solutions

Develops machine learning models and algorithms.

Establishes analytical rigor and statistical methods to analyze large amounts of data, using advanced statistical techniques and mathematical analysesManages projects, from first inception to final operational testing.

Applies in-depth knowledge of systems and products to consult and advise on additional efforts across organization/enterprise.

Authors technology and business strategic roadmaps

Motivates team members and probes into technical details, and mentors others to do the same

Provides guidance to develop enterprise-wide analytics strategy and roadmap.

Interacts with internal and external peers and management to share highly complex information/solutions related to areas of expertise and/or to gain acceptance of new or enhanced technology/ business solutions.


  • 10 or more years of progressively complex experience in data science and machine learning

  • Expertise in advanced analytics tools and languages to analyze large data sets from multiple data sources

  • Expertise in innovating and implementing novel machine learning techniques

  • Proven leadership capabilities.


    The highest level of education desired for candidates in this position is a Master's degree, or PhD preferred in statistics, computer science, analytics, or other quantitative discipline
