Job Summary:

As a member of an R&D project team, the senior systems engineer owns the system design of the product of medium complexity from concept through design and verification. A senior systems engineer focuses on understanding/defining customer needs; product functional and performance requirements; product architecture, constraints and trade-offs; design requirements; safety risk management, and technical risks of a new product being developed or of a current product being changed. He/She works in close collaboration with the project lead on assigned task and provides inputs to products design, cost, and schedule. The senior systems engineer also provides guidance to other engineers on technical issues, engages in design reviews, and helps resolve design challenges.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the identification and prioritization of customer needs

  • Develop/maintain the product use-cases based on intimate knowledge of customers and their environments

  • Develop/maintain the system level requirements to satisfy customer needs

  • Apply requirement driven design through systems engr. principles, communication, and leadership skills

  • Develop/maintain system architecture for the products, based on technology and platform strategies

  • Define subassembly interfaces and allocate subassembly requirements to design teams

  • Efficiently use DOORS for requirement management and tracing

  • Develop/maintain the risk management file in accordance with ISO 14971 and ensure product safety

  • Provide technical leadership to design team, understanding product, project, customer, and business impact

  • Conduct impact analysis for design changes and implement necessary actions

  • Effectively work with test engineering, throughout project to drive efficiency in V&V

  • Effectively plan and manage other systems engineers to complete systems engineering tasks

  • Understand and follow quality and product development processes

  • Identifies & develops new technical ideas and evaluates them against requirements, quality, schedule, and cost

  • Considers customer needs and trends for projects and activities

  • Designs solutions that can be readily adapted to changes in technology and/or clinical use

  • Incorporates business, market, industry, and competitive knowledge into technical solutions

  • Determines required tasks and completes on time with no supervision

  • Identifies and communicates potential risks with appropriate mitigations.

  • Challenges project teams and established work processes and proactively finds creative methods to reach desired performance levels

  • Addresses routine technical problems by leading a team to resolve it

  • Synthesizes complex information gathered from a variety of sources and disseminates to others

  • Supports other engineers on their designs, and also receives guidance from specialist or principal engineer

  • This role does not have supervisory responsibility

  • Drive continuous improvement ideas in processes and best practices.

Required Experience, Education and Skills:

  • BS Degree in Engineering

  • 6 years of engineering experience

  • 3 years of experience working in cross functional team

  • 3 years of experience working with translating customer needs into design requirements and architecture

  • 3 years of experience applying risk management methodologies including DFMEA and Risk/Hazard Analysis

  • Demonstrated experience working on new product development projects resulting in successful products in compliance with FDA or other regulatory bodies.

  • Demonstrated experience making project tradeoff decisions due to constraints and drive action to decisions

  • Demonstrated leader with strong organizational and communication skills

  • Proficient problem solving skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with others in a team environment

  • In depth knowledge of systems engineering methodologies

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Engineering software

  • Experience in the medical device industry is preferred

  • Experience with project management is preferred

  • Experience with SolidEdge and ANSYS preferred

  • Experience with DFSS tools such as Voice of the Customer, Critical to Quality, Quality Function Deployment.

  • Demonstrated analytical strength and experience modeling and simulating multi-domain systems including electrical, electromagnetic, pneumatic and mechanical systems. Proficiency in modeling and simulation using tools such as MATLAB/Simulink preferred

  • Thrives on change and adapts to leader initiated changes
