MITRE Engenuity is seeking a 5G Standards Lead for the Open Generation Consortium, a 5G industry collaboration chartered to deliver the next generation of 5G innovation to industrial verticals.

The 5G Standards Lead will champion the consortium’s standards efforts by engaging externally with organizations impacting global 5G standards, and will work across industry and government, to align standards priorities and contribute to U.S industry advancement. With a solid understanding of the underlying and emerging technologies, standards and use cases, you will analyze potential gaps, gather the technical requirements and document them for roadmap evaluation and standards outcomes. The ideal candidate has a solid technical understanding of the 3GPP standards and is knowledgeable of the relationships between the various organizations that influence 5G standards effort. You will be responsible for developing and executing the strategy for the Open Generation consortium to contribute to advance 5G standards. Responsibilities include managing the standards contribution lifecycle, gathering and prioritizing areas of work, presenting the standards related vision and concrete ideas to other stakeholders; defending and adapting the positioning as necessary based on feedback.

As a member of the Open Generation technical team, you will also be expected to directly participate in technical consortium activities related to end-to-end architecture development design, testbed implementation and experimentations, which will allow a hands-on understanding of issues related to the latest 5G RAN and core/system capabilities, and the development of innovative solutions to further advance the 5G verticals.

Attendance to 3GPP working groups and other related industry groups may also be expected as part of the job. Consequently, the candidate is expected to be available to travel occasionally for week-long meetings.

The successful candidate will execute the following functions:

  • Development and execution of a strategy that leverages where the Open Generation consortium is best positioned to influence standards

  • Proposing and guiding technical efforts designed to demonstrate and support standards submissions

  • Identification of areas in which standards must be modified or extended in order to meet use case requirements that benefit US industry

  • Identification and tracking of standards submissions, identifying those we support

  • Preparation of standards submissions, coordinating with industry stakeholders, government, and regulatory bodies to support submissions

  • Participation in standards meetings to work to gain approval of submissions supported by Open Generation

  • Contribution to other Open Generation technical activities as possible, which will help enable understanding and enhance ability to identify needs and opportunities for innovation. These activities may include architecture development, testbed implementation and experiments design and execution.

Required Qualifications:

  • A thorough understanding of 5G requirements, architecture, specifications, & standards process

  • Demonstrated experience in cellular networks design and optimization, including RF engineering, spectrum engineering.

  • Solid expertise in 3GPP system architecture, in particular 5G Core Network, 5G NG Radio Access Network (NG-RAN), Service Based Architecture, Application and Application Enablement, Security and Performance/Testing.

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields

  • BS and 10 years of related experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3 years or more participating in 3GPP and related standards bodies

  • Track record in having standards submissions accepted by 3GPP and related standards bodies

  • Thorough knowledge of 5G capabilities such as Massive MIMO, Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC), Monolithic vs Split RAN architectures, Open Radio Access Network (ORAN) Radio Intelligent Controller (RIC), network slicing

  • Knowledge of technologies related to specific use cases, such as UAS, V2X, IoT, aeronautical systems, safety critical, and related standards

  • Advanced Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields

  • 15 years experience in cellular networks R&D or Engineering
