The MITRE Corporation Chief Scientist for Defensive Cybersecurity (Hybrid) in Bedford, Massachusetts

Our mission focused team works directly with homeland security sponsors to improve defensive cybersecurity across government and critical infrastructure. This includes a focus on cyber operations (e.g., cyber threat intelligence, cyber threat hunting, adversary emulation, cyber incident response, defensive operations planning) and vulnerability management (e.g., CVE, CWE, and Technology Assurance).

We are seeking a luminary in the fields of defensive cyber operations and/or vulnerability management to serve as Chief Scientist for Defensive Cybersecurity and focus on extending the frontiers of defensive cyber operations and/or vulnerability management for federal, industry, and/or state, local, tribal territorial stakeholders.

The CS will report to the Department Manager (DM) and be part of the Department Leadership team. At the direction of the DM, the CS will partner with other leaders and technical staff on specific research, project delivery, strategic work shaping, and technical quality on efforts associated with the CS’ areas of expertise.

We are seeking candidates who have a demonstrated track record of developing, fostering, promoting and/or fielding significant, innovative technical contributions related to the above technical areas (e.g., defensive cyber operations, vulnerability management/technology assurance) that have been broadly known and adopted related. These contributions could focus on one of these areas, multiple of these areas, and/or integration between both areas.

Job Responsibilities:

Key responsibilities associated with the selected candidate’s area(s) of technical expertise include:

  • Providing original thinking on technical research that will have national impact. Of particular interest, is the development of innovative defensive operations, vulnerability management, and/or technology assurance approaches and solutions “at scale” to measurably improve the defensive cybersecurity of federal civilian, critical infrastructure, and/or state, local, tribal territorial governments.

  • Helping to inform and shape the technical research agenda, research project selection, and research project prioritization and execution.

  • Actively contributing to technical delivery on relevant projects.

  • Keeping abreast of, and providing technical advice about, the evolving technology and threat landscapes that may impact our sponsor’s mission needs/products and services.

  • Serving as a technical resource for leadership and staff including technical quality reviews.

  • Contributing to shaping and developing of work programs that provide impactful, high quality, and innovative work products and support.

  • Assisting in technical transition of research initiatives to sponsors.

  • Maintaining awareness of ongoing and anticipated work programs and their technical needs and supporting opportunities for integration and collaboration across work programs.

  • Maintaining engagement with, and provide contributions to, relevant external technical communities.

  • Sharing relevant technology knowledge and information to increase the organization’s collective knowledge and to spur the development of innovative, mission focused

  • Assisting in hiring and development of department technical staff.

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical field (e.g., cybersecurity, engineering, mathematics, computer science, etc)

  • A minimum of 10 years of related work experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 5 years’ experience

  • Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or applicants who are eligible for security clearances.

    Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated track record of impactful technical contributions to the field of cybersecurity defensive operations and/or cybersecurity vulnerability management.

  • Significant, original, recent, and relevant contributions in the aforementioned area(s) that have extended the frontiers of the discipline and whose capabilities are broadly known and used.

  • An active body of research via recent published works, patents, or adoption of their methods by policy or international standards and should have a history of informing resource prioritization for research and development in their field.

  • Active engagement within their research community via leadership roles in consortia, standards bodies, research journals, National Science Foundation studies, government Blue Ribbon Panels, etc.

  • Passion for coaching talent, working with people and project teams.

  • Demonstrated technical depth and leadership in fields applicable to Department work program.

  • Ability to develop trusted relationships and effectively collaborate with internal co-workers and external partners at all levels.

  • Ability to obtain a Top-Secret Clearance

    Preferred Qualifications :

  • PhD in a relevant technical field (e.g., cybersecurity, engineering, mathematics, computer science, etc) and 10+ years of related work experience

  • Experience working with federal, industry, state, local, tribal territorial governments on homeland security related defensive cybersecurity challenges.

Primary location for this position is McLean, VA and Bedford, MA however the position is open to all MITRE domestic locations for hybrid employees
