Department Summary:

The Cyber Solutions Innovation Center is seeking a Department Manager for the Cyber for Identity Trust and Assurance department. The Department Manager will be responsible for providing strategic leadership to an inspired multi-disciplinary team of researchers and practitioners and drive innovation in the department’s technical areas of focus, with particular emphasis in Cryptography, Software Assurance (SWA), Identity, Credential and Access Management (ICAM) and Trustworthy AI. Our department develops and applies scalable approaches for systems and software, evaluates technology and solutions, leads and fosters external partnerships within the communities we support, and conducts novel research and development. We serve in critical roles including:

  • developing and implementing SWA programs for our sponsors, enabling them to build and maintain assurance in the software they’re deploying. Our expertise also involves deep understanding of software weaknesses and best practices for mitigating them as well as strategies for managing software supply chain security.

  • aiding the sponsor community in applying cryptography and architecting secure cryptographic systems, software, and protocols. We specialize in the application of well-founded cryptographic techniques as well as the design and application of emerging cryptographic techniques for security and privacy, including post-quantum cryptography, fully homomorphic encryption, and secure multi-party computation, among others.

  • developing strategies, assessing policy and technical constraints, and facilitating the deployment of ICAM solutions into cloud, on-premises, and tactical environments. As senior trusted advisors and leaders within the ICAM community internally and external to MITRE, we apply our knowledge of industry trends, advances in commercial technology, and relevant industry standards and protocols to inform our sponsors’ decision-making.

  • working at the intersection of Cybersecurity and AI on trustworthy approaches to applying AI to cybersecurity applications (e.g., autonomous network defense, assessing code for software weaknesses) as well as developing and applying frameworks for evaluating the assurance of AI-based techniques.

  • performing research and development, evaluation and testing and operational support for high-priority sponsor mission applications, MITRE Labs strategic initiatives, and MITRE’s internal research and development program.

The ideal candidate for this position has a blend of strong technical and people leadership competencies and is highly motivated to work collaboratively to address our sponsor’s biggest technical challenges and realize broad-based impact.

This role can be executed from either McLean, VA or Bedford, MA.

Roles and Responsibilities:

The Department Manager will be responsible for setting the technical direction of the Department's capabilities, growing a team of world-class talent, supporting development of new opportunities, and building collaborative relationships across MITRE, our sponsors, industry, and academia.

  • Lead a technically diverse and geographically dispersed team (50% Bedford, 30% McLean, 20% site staff and Teleworkers).

  • Participate as a member of the Division’s Leadership Team, helping to steer the Division’s expertise and innovation to support sponsor operational cybersecurity missions and Division and MITRE Labs’ strategic direction.

  • Work in collaboration with Department Senior Technical Staff, the Group Leaders, and our Capability Area Leads to:

  • Set the strategic vision for the Department and advance our technical capabilities through innovation, external partnerships, and impactful contributions to MITRE’s direct work program in alignment with Division strategy.

  • Facilitate the creation of new opportunities in science and technology as well as applied engineering to ensure work program agility and highly engaged staff.

  • Hire, mentor, develop, and retain world-class staff, emphasizing the creation of opportunities for growth and development, bridging skillset gaps, and anticipating future needs.

  • Develop and enhance trusted relationships with stakeholders within the Division, across MITRE Labs, and with the Program Divisions to envision, shape, and apply cross-cutting and impactful solutions.

  • Pursue and maintain connections with industry and academia to build awareness of cutting-edge technology and research and engage in partnerships that bring value to MITRE and our sponsors.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree and 15+ years related experience, or equivalent combination of related education and work experience

  • Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or applicants who are eligible for security clearances.

  • Proven depth and recognized stature in one or more cybersecurity technical capability areas.

  • Demonstrated ability to build successful collaborations across organizational units.

  • Demonstrated success in leading technical efforts.

  • Track record of success in hiring, guiding, and supporting senior technical staff.

  • Experience managing a high-performing team of at least 8 people.

  • History of successful project initiation (definition, scoping, aligning to need, costing, etc.) and project management (execution, staffing, schedule management, delivery, quality review, etc.).

  • This position requires a minimum of 4 days per week on-site schedule.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in applicable field.

  • Documented success as a consultant to the Federal Government
