Department Summary:

The Defensive Cyber Operations (DCO) Department (L511) is a member of MITRE’s Cyber Operations and Effects Innovation Center (L510) and supports over 40 different sponsor work programs with staff located across 10 MITRE sites. It is home to approximately 65 MITRE Labs technical experts and over 20 interns aligned to the Defensive Cyber Operations, Cybersecurity Analytics and Malware Analysis, and Cyber Deception and Adversary Engagement technical capability areas. The department is directly responsible for leading innovation, advancing technology and, through close partnerships with other organizations in MPS, MNS, MITRE Engenuity, and MITRE Labs, providing our sponsors with hands-on technical DCO expertise.

Job Responsibilities:

The DM will be responsible for attracting, developing, and retaining an outstanding workforce; refining the department’s technical strategy, vision, and goals; and forging partnerships with MITRE program divisions, MITRE innovation centers, and academic and commercial partners. The DM will serve as a member of the Cyber Operations and Effects (L510) Division Senior Leadership Team, helping to steer the Division’s expertise and innovation to support sponsor operational cybersecurity missions.

The DM must be located at a site with current L511 members and is expected to travel as necessary to other sites. The DM role is funded to support up to 35% of the DM’s time managing the department. Candidates are expected to provide direct technical contributions to DCO-related work programs in the remaining time.

Responsibilities include:

  • Proactively attract, develop, and support a diverse, geographically distributed workforce that has the expertise and capabilities needed for our partners.

  • Foster an environment of innovation, technical leadership, collaboration, camaraderie, and technical quality across this wide geography.

  • Support and oversee Capability Area Leads to advance the state of the art in Defensive Cyber Operations, Cybersecurity Analytics and Malware Analysis, and Cyber Deception and Adversary Engagement.

  • Oversee MITRE EngageTM and significantly influence MITRE ATTACK® and the Cyber Analytics Repository.

  • Support, oversee, and partner with Group Leaders to mentor and grow the department team. Ensure staff are aligned to high priority work that leverages their strengths, recognize staff for their accomplishments, and work with under-performing staff. Lead pay and performance actions throughout the year.

  • Partner with MITRE programs, portfolios, and innovation centers to connect and leverage solutions to increase mission impact. Identify appropriate needs and opportunities across MITRE’s sponsor base.

  • Contribute to the direct work program with responsibilities and contributions consummate with high performance senior principal technical staff.

  • Define and drive goals and objectives for the Department and collaborate with Division leadership to develop and drive impactful strategies for the Division and Innovation Center.

  • Encourage and support staff to propose, create, develop, and apply innovative solutions on direct projects and MITRE research.

  • Ensure high technical quality of work products.

  • Initiate and follow-through on cross-organizational efforts to find integrated solutions to meet customer needs and grow Division’s technical impact.

  • Interact effectively and respectfully with all levels of staff within the organization.

  • Directly manage department staffing and budgets.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or similar field, and 15 years of related experience.

  • Hands-on technical expertise in at least one of the department’s capability areas.

  • Experience supporting DoD, DHS, Law Enforcement, or Intelligence Community sponsors and passion for supporting these missions to ensure a safer world.

  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively at high levels within a matrixed organization, as well as across partner and potential customer organizations.

  • Demonstrated ability to recognize, shape and follow through on new strategic partnerships and business opportunities, or to forge new opportunities with existing MITRE customers.

  • Proven track record of servant leadership with demonstrated experience leading programs and mentoring people.

  • Applicants must hold an active Top Secret clearance. An active SCI with current polygraph is preferred. The selected candidate will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.

Salary compensation range and midpoint:

$177,000 - $221,000 - $265,500 Annual
