MITRE is seeking an experienced and dynamic Contracts Director to lead and manage the Contracts Department, ensuring the effective negotiation, execution, and compliance of contracts across the corporation. The organization is responsible for engaging with over 150 customers predominantly across the federal government (both defense and civilian agencies) but also with the private sector, state and local entities, international governments, as well as grant organizations. The diversity of the customer base is also coupled with multiple contract types (CPFF, T&M, Fixed Price, etc.) as well as a robust backlog that is in excess of $2B annually.

This senior leadership role requires a highly skilled individual to oversee the strategic and operational aspects of the company's contract administration, develop contract strategies, and collaborate with various organizations, both internal and external, to ensure compliance with regulations, policies, and client needs.

The Contracts Director will work closely with leadership teams across MITRE’s various departments to align contracting strategies with organizational goals and objectives. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of successfully managing complex contracts, building strong relationships with key stakeholders, and providing strategic leadership in a government contracting environment.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Contract Management & Strategy:Lead the development and execution of contract strategies across various programs, by setting objectives that are in alignment with both the operational and financial objectives of the company. Furthermore, align the contracting organization’s operating and engagement model to achieve these objectives.

  • Leadership & Team Development:Manage, mentor, and grow a high-performing team of contract professionals. Foster a culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and professional development within the Contracts Department.

  • Compliance & Risk Management:Ensure compliance with applicable federal regulations, FAR/DFAR guidelines, company policies, and contractual obligations. Monitor potential risks related to contract terms and conditions and proactively implement mitigation strategies.

  • Client & Stakeholder Relations:Serve as the primary driver for internal and external stakeholders on contract matters. Work closely with legal, finance, program management, and senior leadership to develop strategies for contract negotiations, renewals, amendments, and dispute resolution. Be the integral leader that works across functions to balance the myriad of requirements to get to the satisfactory outcome across all parties.

  • Contract Negotiation:Lead and/or provide guidance on high-stakes negotiations with customers and partners. Develop and implement strategies to maximize value for MITRE in accordance with the company’s strategy while managing potential risks and liabilities.

  • Proposal Support:Collaborate with proposal teams to support contract-related matters during proposal development, including pricing strategies, risk identification, and compliance with solicitation requirements.

  • Contract Financial Performance Monitoring:Oversee contract performance, ensuring that both contractual and financial obligations are met in a timely and efficient manner. Collaborate with project teams to address any issues or modifications that may arise during contract performance.

  • Regulatory & Legal Oversight:Stay abreast of changes in federal contracting regulations and industry standards, ensuring MITRE’s contract practices remain compliant and competitive. Advise senior leadership on potential impacts of regulatory changes.

Skills & Expertise:

  • In-depth knowledge of federal contracting regulations (FAR, DFARS, etc.), and the government procurement process.

  • Strong understanding of risk management, pricing strategies, and contract compliance.

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams and with external partners.

  • Strong leadership abilities with experience in team development and managing cross-functional relationships.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret contract terms, legal provisions, and regulations.

  • Expertise in dispute resolution, claims, and contract modifications.

  • Knowledge of CLM tools (Unison, iCertis, etc.)

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 15 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 12 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 10 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

  • At least 15 years of experience in contract management within a government contracting environment, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.

  • Extensive experience negotiating, drafting, and managing federal contracts (FAR/DFAR).

  • Proven track record of leading complex negotiations and managing high-value contracts.

  • This position has an on-site requirement of 5 days a week on-site.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification in Contract Management (e.g., CPCM, CFCM) is preferred.

  • Masters degree in Business Administration, Law, or a related field

  • Active security clearance
