MITRE’s Electronic Systems Development and Embedded Security department is seeking to hire talented and creative engineers with a background in hardware and software/firmware security for embedded systems to support advanced research and development projects of national significance.

Qualified candidates will join a team of technical experts focused on embedded system security. This multi-disciplinary team performs hands-on research and analysis and develops proof-of-concept prototypes to demonstrate and advance the state-of-the-art in embedded security. Our diverse set of sponsors and research objectives provide a wide variety of interesting work opportunities. Example project activities include:

  • Develop new approaches and countermeasures for emerging threats to embedded systems

  • Help develop prototypes (hardware and software) to demonstrate advanced capabilities

  • Perform hands-on security assessments of embedded systems

  • Develop software for interfacing with and controlling electronic lab equipment for data collection, measurement, and analysis

  • Contribute creative and innovative ideas to help shape internal research

  • Track, adapt, and apply academic and industry progress on the state-of-the-art in embedded security analysis and protection techniques to secure our sponsors’ systems

  • Collaborate with academic partners to improve embedded security education at our nation’s universities

Required Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or similar field and 2+ years of related experience

  • Must be US citizen capable of obtaining and maintaining a Secret security clearance

  • Experience with one or more embedded security topics including but not limited to side-channel analysis, fault attacks, board-level, RF, and firmware/software reverse engineering, and vulnerability discovery

    Preferred Qualifications:

Highly qualified candidates would meet some of the following preferred qualifications. However, we do not expect any individual to meet all of these. We are looking to fill multiple positions according to complementary technical skills.

  • BS, MS, or PhD degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or similar field and 5+ years of related experience

  • Breadth of technical understanding in topics relating to embedded systems security

  • Skills in software development

  • Skills in FPGA or ASIC development

  • Software reverse-engineering or malware analysis for embedded systems

  • Tear down and reverse engineering techniques for embedded systems (hardware interface capture and probing, protocol analysis, board-level RE and modifications, side-channel analysis, fault induction, etc.)

  • Invasive and semi-invasive attacks (and protection techniques) on integrated circuits

  • Technical understanding of architecture and implementation of software compilers or hardware design tools such as synthesis tools

  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written)
