Position Description:

Amptek, a business unit within AMETEK, is seeking an experienced FPGA Design Engineer to join our multidisciplinary technical team developing industry leading x-ray spectroscopy sensors and systems. If you are skilled in digital design, signal processing and verification methodology, Amptek has an immediate opening that it wants to discuss.

The opportunity is to play a key role developing new offerings in our digital pulse processing (DPP) product line. Amptek is a world leader in producing x-ray detectors for analytical chemistry and material science, found in both laboratory and portable applications, and even in space. Delivering high quality and customized solutions to our customers is a core value.

An ideal candidate should have demonstrated experience in RTL coding, understand data filtering algorithms, and be familiar with product development cycles – from concept through production. High level responsibilities will include maintenance of legacy designs, supporting manufacturing and customer needs, and development of next generation products. All phases of product introduction will be encountered – concept creation, design, test verification and documentation. Completing designs will require experience with microcontrollers, embedded systems, ADCs/DACs, and serial/USB communication interfaces. Beyond FPGA design, being able to contribute to digital and mixed signal board development is also desirable.

Expected Responsibilities

o Specify, design, and develop FPGA architectures and microprocessor integration. o Develop and evaluate adaptive filtering algorithms for discrete event signal streams. o Create test benches and test vectors to validate FPGA designs. Identify corner cases. Create pseudo-random numbers to test all scenarios. o Testing designs in hardware, using standard electronic bench equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power supply, meters). o Updating and converting prior FPGA algorithms from UML/state machine diagrams into VHDL/Verilog code. o Design, develop, and test firmware in Amptek’s embedded systems. o Develop software as need to support hardware designs and tests. o Handle active role on multiple projects (e.g., 2-3) simultaneously, working either independently or as a team member. o Contribute to the communicative aspects of products development – prepare technical reports, maintain logs, perform data analysis, report on project status. o Maintain documentation with company quality systems. o Provide technical support to production team and occasional interaction with customers to resolve technical issues.

Position Requirements:

Required Experience

o Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field. Several years (e.g., 5-10 years) in a commercial environment is optimal. o FPGA RTL design experience using Verilog or VHDL. o Familiarity with 8051-compatible microprocessors and embedded firmware development. o Familiarity with reading electrical schematic and PCB layout designs. o Previous use of schematic capture tools (e.g., MATLAB, OrCAD, LTSpice) in circuit analysis and simulation. o Programming in C/C++. o Well-versed in the MS Office applications.

Desirable Experience

o Familiarity with low noise amplifiers and high voltage applications. o Experience with PCB layout and EMI/EMC considerations. o Have familiarity with common electro-mechanical components and standards.
