MITRE’s Electronic Systems Development and Embedded Security department is seeking to hire talented and creative engineers with significant expertise in hardware security for embedded systems to lead and support advanced research and development projects of national significance. This position offers the opportunity to lead technical efforts where secure design and analysis are the primary objectives through hands-on assessments and prototyping. Our work focuses on hardware exploitation and countermeasure implementation for SoCs and embedded systems to deliver state-of-the art security solutions across a broad set of applications. Furthermore, this position offers exciting opportunities to propose and lead new internal security research efforts for emerging threats to public interest.

Responsibilities include:

This position provides exciting opportunities to lead hands-on research and analysis and develop proof-of-concept prototypes to demonstrate and advance the state-of-the-art in embedded security. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate and lead teams to perform hands-on security assessments of embedded systems

  • Design and develop new approaches and countermeasures for emerging threats to embedded systems

  • Lead the development of prototypes to demonstrate advanced capabilities

  • Provide security expertise and consultation for a range of sponsors and challenges

  • Design experiments that include development of custom hardware and software for interfacing with and controlling electronic lab equipment for data collection, measurement, and analysis

  • Lead internal research projects and aid others in the process of developing and proposing research ideas

  • Collaborate with academic partners to advance joint research efforts

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field, and 8+ years of related experience

  • Must be a US citizen capable of obtaining and maintaining a US government Secret clearance

  • Expertise and practical experience in hardware attacks and countermeasures which may include tampering, invasive and non-invasive attacks for SoCs and embedded systems

  • Experience leading teams developing or assessing secure embedded systems

  • Understanding or expertise in hardware security primitives to include but not limited to PUFs, secure storage, key management, cryptographic cores, etc.

  • Ability to define secure hardware architectures

  • Strong leadership and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

Highly-qualified candidates would meet several of the following preferred qualifications, however, we do not expect any individual to meet all of these and are looking to fill multiple roles according to technical expertise.

  • M.S. or PhD in Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field and 12+ years of related experience

  • Ability to work with customers to understand their use cases and formulate a path forward, requires excellent oral and written communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences

  • Ability to build consensus and partnerships across industry, academia, and customers to advance state of the art in embedded systems security

  • Experience with Anti-Tamper design and countermeasure development

  • Familiarity with secure US government systems

  • Expertise in tear-down and reverse engineering techniques for embedded systems (hardware interface capture and probing, protocol analysis, board-level RE and modifications, side-channel analysis, fault induction, etc.)
