Job Description

COVID Vaccination Requirement: Due to Federal Contract requirements, this position requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 unless granted a medical or religious exemption.

Location: This role is M-F onsite at the Teledyne FLIR facility in Billerica, MA or facility in Wilsonville, OR. This is not a remote role. Candidates to the area are given preference.

Sr. Director, Systems Engineering

This individual will be responsible for directly managing a team of EO/IR, laser, gimbal/servo and navigation system engineers and coordinates with project teams drawn from interdisciplinary competences to create an environment for world-class execution and technical leadership.

The Department includes the following focus areas: EO/IR systems and image processing, laser systems, gimbal/servo systems, optical design, and navigation systems. The department is responsible for delivery of complex EO/IR systems in collaboration with experienced teams focused on electrical, software, optical and mechanical sub-systems.

The successful candidate will be passionate about developing, attracting, and inspiring the engineering team, and technical experts necessary to support the demanding timelines of our product roadmap. The candidate will actively improve design life cycle processes. Also, he/she will be responsible for strengthening the technical competence and capabilities of the group by bringing new technology and capabilities into the organization, becoming a recognized leader for key competences within the organization.

As a leader within the Surveillance organization, the successful candidate will set high standards for teamwork, collaboration and execution based on trust and respect of novel approaches to complex problems.

Responsibilities

  • Leading and manage diverse team of engineers

  • Establish meaningful and measurable goals and communicate effectively with a team

  • Oversee the direct line management activities for the section, including communication, performance management, career development, and talent acquisition

  • Strategize and execute continuous improvement initiatives

  • Collaborate and communicate with other teams

  • Overall allocation of systems resources in a matrixed engineering organization

  • Optimizing practices, processes, and procedures

  • Ensure employee compliance with company policies and procedures

  • Oversight of personnel issue resolution

  • Timecard approvals

  • Provide support to the business partners and leadership team

  • Work as a technical lead or individual contributor; leader duties account for approximately 25% of the employee’s time

  • Coaching and mentor members of the System Engineering staff

  • May provide advanced direction on a complex technical subject matter area (as with a cross-program, cross-department, or system-level performance issue).

  • May lead cross-functional meetings to maintain coordination between other functional organizations in handoff of product from engineering to production

    Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM)

  • Advanced degree preferred

  • 12+ years of direct work experience with 8+ years of direct management experience.

  • Experience managing multiple projects and multiple groups

  • Excellent coaching and mentoring skills

  • Proficient with Integration and Test best practices

  • Experience in the front end of the business including proposal estimation

  • Experience with earned value management (EVMS) tracking and reporting

  • Proficient with requirements decomposition, flow-down and verification

  • Previous management experience leading complex projects/activities

  • Demonstrated experience in bringing complex systems to production

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to translate, statistically analyze data, and effectively report problems through written and/or graphical formats

  • Excellent customer interface skills, with an advanced understanding of customer relationship building

  • Ability to apply advanced project management skills, including estimation, scheduling and monitoring multi-functional, long-term projects/activities

  • Demonstrated ability to improve quality

  • Knowledge of system engineering best practices

  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically

  • Ability to achieve a high level of performance by setting clear expectations and holding people accountable

  • Ability to multitask and work under pressure

  • Applicants must be either a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, legal permanent resident, asylee, refugee or must be eligible to apply for and obtain the appropriate export control license from the U.S. Departments of State or Commerce.
