VMware Director, Engineering - Developer Growth (Modern Applications Platform Business Unit) in Boston, Massachusetts

What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?

As a developer you know how frustrating it can be to spend months developing something only to wait weeks to see it land in production. You are keen to help visualize the hurdles that block an application getting to production through new development, partner tool integration all with the goal of speeding up this path to production in a customer complaint process. In addition to visualizing the path to production, you are keen to help support developers getting up and running quickly and enabling them with a starter pack of libraries and templates for easy deployments on Kubernetes.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

  • You can communicate and collaborate with product and design in your development and you are constructive in sharing your opinions

  • You track and oversee the architecture and quality of deliverables from the two engineering teams

  • There is shared context on the teams on the architecture of the roadmap 3 and 6 months out.

  • Your programs are healthy as determined by key metrics of engagement, retention, work/life balance, delivery that you helped put in place

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

As a leader in Engineering, you will:

  • Manage headcount, budget, hiring, on-boarding

  • Build and enabe two programs to sustainably deliver high quality solutions

  • Coach managers and help to sustainably grow the teams and individuals on your program.

  • Lead and orient a team of 20+ engineers and managers towards delivering against program objectives.

  • Work at a program level with product leads, technical leads, designers, and people managers in figuring out what to work on next and how to prepare for future work.

  • Bring clarity where there is uncertainty, managing risk and continuously delivering value.

  • Defining experiments, measuring success metrics and using data to inform decisions.

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

The hiring manager for this role is Catherine McGarvey, VP of Engineering. Catherine has worked for the Modern Application Platform Business Unit (MAPBU) at VMware since December 2019. Prior to MAPBU, Catherine was VP of Software Engineering for Pivotal in New York. She joined Pivotal in 2011. Catherine currently leads Engineering for the Developer and App Platform Pillar, partnering with Graham Siener and Ryan Morgan. Catherine supports 250 engineers spread across 20 programs.
