Engineering Director – Mobile Ops and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE)

We’re looking for an Engineering Director to drive the delivery of new SRE capabilities (iOS and Android) for the American Express global membership mobile app. This Engineering Director will also lead the team that manages 24x7 production operations for the mobile apps.

We want someone with knowledge of mobile app development (iOS and/or Android), with experience in Site Reliability Engineering (SRE). Should enjoy solving complex technical problems and working with newer technologies.

You’ll be part of the Mobile Engineering team whose mission is to be essential in our Customers’ digital lives by providing value, convenience, and delight wherever they are. Your primary responsibilities will be to lead a team of SRE engineers and an operations team responsible for 24x7 performance and availability of the mobile apps.

*Responsibilities: *

  • Work with a team of highly talented mobile engineers to build and deliver the mobile SRE roadmap in the areas pertaining to – instrumentation of the enterprise mobile app, alerting capabilities, automation, self-healing.

  • Work with mobile engineering and product management team to understand availability and performance goals

  • Work with backend teams to help achieve the mobile availability and performance goals

  • Help mobile engineering teams with capacity planning, instrumentation, performance and availability.

  • Cultivate an environment of continuous engineering improvement through mentoring, feedback, and metrics 

  • Lead Engineers focused on building new SRE capabilities for the mobile apps.

  • Lead 24x7 production operations team for mobile.

  • Be the on-call point of escalation for mobile.

  • Manage communications about mobile outages and impacts to customers.

  • Lead blameless Root Cause Analysis after incidents occur.

Qualifications

Relevant Experience:

  • OpenTelemetry

  • Crash Reporting

  • Managing software engineering teams

  • Cloud Infrastructure (Kubernetes) 

  • Networking Infrastructure

  • Coaching and mentoring highly talented technical teams 

  • Attracting, hiring retaining and leading top engineering talent 

  • Kotlin, Swift, iOS, Android

  • Degree in computer science, engineering-related field or equivalent experience
