Merck Operations Lead – Linux Computing Environment in Boston, Massachusetts

Job Description

The candidate shall lead the operations team by working closely with Architects, DevOps Engineers, Solution/Workflow Engineers and Research Scientists to implement/script/operate both on-premise and cloud based infrastructure used in supporting scientific workflows. This technical role requires deep knowledge and experience with large computing environments. You will be responsible to lead a team of IT professionals, both employees and contractors, for the overall administration & health of multiple components of predominantly Linux environment. Components include but not limited to clusters, servers, storage, licenses, workstations, change management, documentation, backup & disaster recovery. You will be responsible in ensuring reliability, availability & performance of this dynamic environment. You will facilitate to identify and understand root causes on critical problems throughout the platform, and supervise team members to resolve issues.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead and grow a team of highly qualified IT professionals, internal and outsourced, geographically distributed.

  • Plan, coordinate, manage and support day-to-day operations of multi-site research computing environment, including OS, job scheduling, storage systems, backup/archive/disaster recovery systems, GPU/3D workstations, capacity planning for growth and/or infrastructure refresh, etc.

  • Manage projects to implement new hardware, OS and software updates and processes in collaboration with others in-house (e.g., Enterprise wide Global Network Infrastructure, VM Infrastructure, Data Center, etc.), contracted or vendor teams.

  • Develop plans and execute planned down-times for upgrades/expansions, capacity upgrades, management of equipment life cycles, etc.

  • Develop and establish a service infrastructure for efficient management of resources including automation, documentation, monitoring and reporting; ensure reliable issue tracking and resolution.

  • Improve up-time and tune systems to get maximum performance and cost efficiency.

Education Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, or another disciplines with relevant experience.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • A minimum of 5 years experience directly related to operation and support of large Linux computing platforms both on-premise and cloud

  • Advanced skills in Linux OS platform administration with fluency in at least 1 scripting language such as Bash

  • Demonstrated ability & prior experience in managing a diverse group of “Computer Operations & Support” professionals including outsourced contractors and cross functional collaborations

  • A minimum of 2 years experience with using automated build and deployment technologies such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef, PF, Cobbler or other automation tools.

  • Good knowledge of storage, networking, monitoring, backup, archive and disaster recovery solutions; to be able to effectively prioritize, delegate & manage environment with assistance from subject matter expert’s (inhouse or outsourced)

  • Troubleshooting skills in the enterprise environment

  • Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate technical and non-technical information verbally and in writing.

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Experience with HPE, Cray, Isilon & AWS

  • Experience managing HPC environment with PBS Pro, Univa/Grid Engine, Kubernetes, Nextflow, Cromwell, or others

  • Experience with container technologies

  • Experience with project management technologies such as Confluence and Jira

  • Knowledge of the drug discovery process
