Cengage Learning Operations Strategy Manager in Boston, Massachusetts

As the Operations Strategy Manager, you will be part of the team that is transforming Cengage’s operations strategy. Cengage is transforming as it grows. You will join the Cengage Business Operations team and work with the team’s Analysts and Directors to empower and drive the company’s operational evolution. You will partner with executive leadership and subject matter experts to build resilient processes, improve information and data flows, and drive innovation at the core of the company’s operating strategy.

Specifically, you will apply your experience managing broad operating programs to improve Cengage’s core commercial, business unit, and support services business outcomes. Managers on this team are project leaders, working with the whole team to deliver executive outcomes. You will lead efforts to ensure that Cengage’s operations strategy and transformation programs are designed to streamline processes, improve transparency, and introduce new, more effective approaches to existing workflows. You will be asked to develop overarching design principles, gather requirements, document and analyze solution landscapes, provide data-centered recommendations, and drive implementation on change management projects that may span across all of Cengage’s operations. Past and current examples of work include introducing a new project management tool for product development, streamlining major financial processes, providing a data bridge between product development and sales, and formalizing Cengage’s COVID-19 response strategy.

This position is full-time and can be based in Boston, MA, New York City, or other locations for the right candidate.

    Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Execute pan-Cengage operational transformation initiatives by developing work plans, gathering, and synthesizing relevant data, leading analyses, and developing actionable recommendations for successful change management

  • Scale best practices, including by forming a deep understanding of Cengage’s products, processes, systems/tools, personnel, and strategic direction, which will unlock sources of value, efficiency, and innovation for the organization

  • Collaboratively support and work alongside a team of high-performance business operations, strategy, and transformation leaders and peers.

  • Coach and mentor analysts for project success and their professional development

    Skills and Experiences, You Will Need Here

  • A four-year college degree in business or related field and/or previous experience with the following -

  • 5+ years of professional experience, including corporate, team, and program leadership. Should have experience in a professional services organization (consulting, private equity) and/or cross-functional leadership roles (corporate strategy, corporate leadership program, business operations, or corporate transformation)

  • Experience and strong presence in interacting with senior level management in formal presentations and informal decision-driving discussions

  • Command in Excel and PowerPoint to draw conclusions from large data sets, summarize, and tell clear, executive-grade stories

  • Facilitation, active listening, and consensus building with multiple stakeholders. You are confident providing input into decision-making processes

  • Comfortable with multitasking and ensuring the macro-and-micro details of all decisions; able to context shift between domains, such as finance, sales, product development/delivery, organizational change, and team leadership

    Skills and Experiences, That Are Preferred

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Operations, System Dynamics, Business, or related field(s)

  • Previous Operational Consulting experience at firms like Booz, Accenture, A.T. Kearney, Deloitte, McKinsey, Bain, etc. or like boutique firms

  • Experience with project management tools and techniques (e.g. Microsoft Project, Trello, Smartsheet)

  • Experience with data visualization and analysis tools (e.g. Tableau, PowerBI, or other)

  • Experience documenting and analyzing business workflows (e.g. Lucidchart, Visio)
