VMware Performance Engineer and Benchmark Developer in Boston, Massachusetts

The Elevator Pitch: Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?

Dive in to the exciting world of benchmark development and performance characterization working with the industry’s premier benchmarks. Help define and create the next generation benchmarks while learning and sharpening your own skills in the rapidly changing world of cloud technologies. In addition, you will become proficient in virtualization and cloud, conduct performance analysis on the latest technologies top to bottom (Cloud, HCI, storage, networking, processors, etc), and contribute to our automation process.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

Your success in the first year will be measured as follows:

90 days: Familiarization with key benchmarks, while contributing to feature additions and bug fixes (Primarily in Java and Python).

180 days: Expect fully proficient with your primary benchmark and able to add major new features, while also conducting performance analysis in virtualized environments.

360 days: Expect fully proficient with multiple benchmarks and familiarized with automation engine, able to contribute new features to stay not just relevant, but leading edge.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

Your time will be split between software development and performance analysis.

• Most of your time in software development will involve writing high-quality code with excellent test coverage using Java and Python. You can expect to be the owner and take accountability for the quality of your code.

• Performance characterization projects will vary based on VMware and partner software and hardware release cycles. They will involve benchmarks and features which you helped create.

• Collaborate in-person and through Slack or e-mail with other VMware performance engineers as well as one or more product teams to identify opportunities for improvements in performance and scale of VMware products such as vSphere, vSAN, and VMware Cloud solutions.

• Spend time learning VMware’s standard operations, products, and improving your engineering and professional skills. We want you to be curious, learning both from team members and individual study.

Required Skills:

  • Strong programming and scripting skills in languages such as Java, Python, or similar.

  • Strong Operating Systems fundamentals

  • Hands-on experience with Virtualization, Kubernetes and container technologies, including Linux admin skills

  • Proven ability to work well with others in a fast paced, iterative development environment

  • Excellent communication skills and demonstrated writing ability

  • Experience in performance benchmarking, analysis and optimization

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

You will be a key member of a distributed team that spans time zones from Hawaii to Germany, with central office locations in Palo Alto, CA and Austin, TX.

Although distributed, the team works very well together and members support each other while tackling challenging projects. Team members understand the importance of teamwork and collaboration while maintaining independence and work flexibility.

As a member of this team, you will be reporting to Juan Garcia-Rovetta, Director of Engineering for the Enterprise and Outbound Performance Team.

Juan has been focused on performance engineering up and down the application stack for over 25 years.

His management philosophy is to support each team member in achieving their project and career goals. Due to the distributed nature of the team, Juan believes in empowering each team member to make key decisions about their project while supporting and providing guidance and priorities.
