RedHat Principal Software Engineer in Boston, Massachusetts

Job summary

The Red Hat Office of the CTO Advanced Telco Enablement team is looking for a Principal Software Engineer to join us to assist with partner related engineering engagements in Boston, MA. In this role, you will contribute to partner enablement projects that may include partner requirement discovery, partner ecosystem proof of concepts (PoCs) integrated with Red Hat platforms, direct engineer to engineer guidance, alignment, and engineering activities, and forward looking Red Hat platform enhancement design and development, amongst other similar tasks. This work will directly enable our strategic telco and service provider (SP) partner concepts and offerings. You will help create the next generation of telco and SP related offerings as part of a geographically distributed multi-national team.

Primary job responsibilities

  • Work closely with engineers on the team to develop forward looking telco and SP features and PoCs

  • Interact with project managers, partner managers, and platform engineers from multiple teams within Red Hat and within open source communities

  • Advocate internally for feature development and support needed for strategic partner next generation offerings

  • Design and develop feature code needed to support strategic partner next generation offerings

  • Provide “Voice of Red Hat” for partnered development activities

  • Mentor and educate junior level team members

  • Contribute to the success of the team by sharing your work and expertise with the team

Required skills

  • 10-15 years of industry experience with enterprise software development

  • 10-15 years of industry experience in partner or customer facing engineering role

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to directly interact with Partners

  • Ability to quickly learn and work on a day-to-day basis with technologies like Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Red Hat Openstack Platform, and Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform

  • Experience contributing to or participating in open source projects

  • Experience with distributed systems design and development

  • Ability to function in a dynamic bleeding edge technology environment

  • Proficiency in at least 1 High-level programming language such as C, C++, Rust, or Golang

  • Experience participating in the open source community is a big plus

  • Network software development experience is a big plus

  • Experience in production telco or service provider environments either as a network operator or vendor is a big plus

Experience with the following is considered a plus:

  • Operational support system (OSS) or business support system (BSS)

  • Real-time programming

  • Container development

  • Virtualization

  • Cloud computing or cloud-native

  • OpenShift

  • OpenStack

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Fedora, or CentOS development

  • Software defined networking (SDN) or network functions virtualization (NFV)

  • Scripting

  • Embedded software or system
