Amazon Principal TPM, FPDS in Boston, Massachusetts

Description

Amazon Foundational People Data Services (FPDS) is looking for an experienced Principal Technical Program Manager (P-TPM) to design, deliver and own cross-organizational (L10/L8) solutions with a broad, positive impact on millions of Amazonians every day.

Want to make a difference in the everyday experiences of employees through transformational, Amazon-built (1P) services that deliver impact? Want to work with a mission-driven team at the center of empowering builders across Amazon to innovate amazing solutions powered by Amazonian data?

In this role, you will lead and influence a complex program with Steam-level visibility while coordinating across multiple L10 and L8 leaders, product and engineering teams. This program is re-imagining how innovative people services are designed and delivered at Amazon for Amazonians by Amazonians. As a successful candidate, you will have a proven track record managing technology programs with broad cross-organizational and/or cross-business impact. You will be proficient in listening to stakeholders, defining requirements, negotiating priorities, and delivering the right solutions using mechanisms.

You will have demonstrated that you have solved complex problems, while your solutions are as simple as possible. Your peers recognize you for achievements in improving engineering efficiency and architectural quality, reducing bottlenecks, and obsessing over customers. You operate with autonomy, showing high judgment with technical and business decisions, while keeping the organization informed with crisp, well-written updates that deepen trust. You have a passion for coaching and guiding TPMs through leading by example and your obsession on TPM excellence, from resources to risk management to communication.

Key job responsibilities

• Own a complex, cross-org (L10/L8) program that is transforming people services with 1P solutions.

• Drive alignment across senior leaders, including work backward plans, resource requirements, technical and business strategy.

• Collaborate with PMTs and SDMs on roadmaps, priorities, Agile planning, dependency mapping, forecasting and tradeoffs to bring to life amazing solutions for your program.

• Influence the architecture, design, implementation, testing, and deployment of software solutions by SDEs.

• Mentor and force-multiply a group of TPMs with a focus on builders across Amazon who produce and consume people data for their services.

• Engage with Principal Engineers to evaluate technical designs.

• Inspect the operational readiness and resiliency of services that your solutions rely on.

• Build successful partnerships with peers and leaders in Amazon, while adding your experience and knowledge so we continuously improve.

• Seek opportunities to simplify and reduce risks, while you innovate for customers.

A day in the life

You’ll be meeting with stakeholders, understanding complex, cross-org (L10/L8) challenges, and designing solutions for goals and initiatives, including Steam-level. You’ll work closely with SDMs, PMTs, TPMs, SDEs, and Principal Engineers on the technical design, work backward planning, dependency mapping between teams, prioritization, risks and tradeoffs, and delivery to customers. You’ll communicate your goal status with crisp, accurate, timely updates to leaders which earn trust. You’ll lean in, solve problems, eliminate blockers, and escalate HDTs with excellent, well-written docs. You’ll look around multiple corners, identify risks, and devise innovative ways to resolve issues while delighting your customers with solid, on-time solutions.

About the team

Beginning in 2022, we built Foundational People Data Services, a secure, reliable, and fast way to store and consume worker data. We have helped builders across Amazon invent 7,800+ and growing experiences with our AWS-like, 1P data services which focus on the builder experience. We obsess over ensuring our data services are as foundational as electricity and water – always available, completely reliable, and convenient to use by builders. We’ve launched a secure and scalable people data store and event publishing bus; a people data catalog with federated ownership and compliance; role-based authorization and access controls to protect confidentiality; streamlined privacy reviews, depersonalization, and data subject access/deletion requests (DSARs/DSDRs); Tier-1 real-time data APIs for people data (PAPI); high-volume data transfer to the Andes data lake; and synthetic worker data to streamline testing.

We have seen rapid growth, with Amazon systems consuming 1 trillion employee records annually through billions of API calls to our 1P data services each week. We now have 5,000+ builder customer teams across AWS, Alexa, Payroll, Builder Tools, MyHR, A to Z, Clarity, GREF, Workplace Health & Safety, Time and Attendance, and more – over 75% of them are outside of People Experience & Technology (PXT). Our 1P data services offer real-time APIs and updates, powering vital end-user tools like Phone Tool (1,100+ page views per minute and 50M+ per month), Chime (800K+ calls per workday), Slack (350k+ employees and contingent workers using per workday), facilities badge access (95k+ salaried employees currently swipe in/out of their building each work day), LDAP, internal systems access, payroll, and more.
