Liberty Mutual Senior Data Scientist, Strategic Model Development - GRS Underwriting Strategy & Performance in Boston, Massachusetts

Liberty Mutual’s newly formed Global Risk Solutions (GRS) organization is seeking an experienced modeler within Underwriting Strategy and Performance to support model development and application of predictive analytics solutions across various businesses in an $11B NWP portfolio. The role entails being the lead modeler on a wide variety of projects providing exposure and deep understanding of both commercial and specialty insurance and the ability to interface with actuaries, underwriters, IT and other functions across the organization. Projects can range in duration and scope forming a stimulating environment with ample opportunities to learn but also tackle diverse and complex challenges. Examples of past projects include developing property insurance model for $100M book, general casualty models for both domestic and global segments and claim severity models. The role has the potential of developing into a managerial position in the future and comes with membership into a large and thriving data science community within the broader Liberty Mutual organization.

This position requires strong technical skills and past modeling experience. The candidate must have good and effective communication skills, superior analytical and problem solving skills, comfort with ambiguity and sparse data and the ability to work with leadership within and outside of the department.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop predictive models and other analytical solutions working closely with product lead to answer different business problems by using statistical software such as SAS, R etc.

  • Support related processes around effectively deploying model to business

  • Prepare data for modelling and make best/creative use of applicable and available internal or external data

  • Collaborate with broader data science team and support the development of tools and technologies to enhance department’s modelling capabilities along with mentoring junior data scientists

  • Research new statistical and mathematical techniques that are suitable and helpful for solving business related problems

  • Effectively communicate results in written, oral and presentation formats

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in statistics, economics or related quantitative field required

  • Ph.D. or Masters in a quantitative discipline preferred

  • 3-5 years prior relevant experience, preferably in directly developing and deploying models in a business setting

  • Prior managerial experience helpful but not necessary

  • Prior knowledge of property/casualty industry preferred but not required

  • Demonstrated understanding of advanced techniques in statistics and predictive analytics. Expert analytic, quantitative and problem solving skills with proven ability to make data driven decisions and influence leaders

  • Advanced proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and statistical software packages (e.g., SAS, Python, R)

  • Strong business acumen and communication skills, as well as ability to effectively present technical concepts to non-technical individuals, including senior managers

  • Proven ability to quickly grasp new concepts and technologies and adapt to changes and demands in fast-paced, dynamic environment
