Our Digital Platforms Group creates and builds data-driven digital products that enhance teaching and improve learning outcomes. In addition, the team conducts research and development targeted at new market opportunities in the quickly evolving education technology space.

The Senior Data Engineer will help drive the design and development of highly scalable enterprise data mart deployed on Amazon for our core analytics and data science integration platform. You will create, own, manage, share support of, and drive best practices for our enterprise data mart which is used across multiple data intensive applications including reporting and data science for MHE’s Digital Platform Group.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

•Provides technical mentorship and coaching to junior engineers on the development team. •Work effectively with Technical Product Management and SCRUM masters to meaningfully contribute to our agile team. •High/Low level design, hands on software development, create frameworks, use third party frameworks, code reviews. •Identify gaps and proactively improve system service level agreements.

Minimum Qualifications/KSA’s

•5 years of experience developing on OLTP databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Aurora) with in-depth knowledge of SQL, including writing functions and views •5 years of experience with Java or Scala •3 years of experience with Apache Spark •Experience with analytics and machine learning techniques •Understanding of the fundamentals of statistics •5 years of experience with OLAP databases and ETL data processing concepts with full implementation cycle experience in enterprise data marts •Experience creating dimensional models using star and snowflake schemas •2 years of experience and strong interest in developing scalable data services on top of Amazon RDS. Any of these technologies would be a plus: oDatabases: Redshift, MySQL, Aurora, PostgreSQL oEC2 instances •Experience with agile engineering practices •Architecture and design experience for Database systems technologies with a focus on data marts and data warehouses •Excellent problem solving and root cause analysis skills •Experience with performance tuning and scaling production databases including query indexing and optimization skills •Strong verbal and written communication skills •Experience supporting data marts including monitoring, creating disaster recovery plans, and creating and implementing backup and recovery strategies
