What you'll do here:

As a Senior Strategic Manager, you'll be responsible for developing, overseeing and implementing strategic projects across multiple lines of business that support GTS vision and short and long-term plans.

This individual is specifically focused on maturing GTS performance in two critical areas; Project/Program Management, and Process Improvement. This individual proactively manages projects with a goal of meeting business commitments on time and on budget while minimizing risks and maximizing efficiencies.

Position Description (Essential Duties & Responsibilities):

Project/Program Management

  • Works across teams to build and manage project and program documentation, including planning, work estimates, schedules and budgets, and successfully deliver on commitments.

  • Provides leadership to project teams to ensure projects are delivered within standards, scope, budget and schedules as identified in the overall planning process.

  • Works with other team members to share learning, mitigate technical dependencies, and maximize practice consistency between teams.

  • Provides high transparency with respect to projects and teams by actively identifying the reporting/information needs and facilitating a communication plan.

  • Manages project teams consisting of a variety of technical and non-technical members both internal and external to the organization. Team members may include internal Cengage employees, external vendors and consultants, and/or offshore resources.

Process Improvement

  • Supports GTS management initiatives through research and investigation, consultation, management, support and implementation of improved processes that directly impact business outcomes.

  • Works directly with GTS leaders, business users, external providers and other specialists to deliver strategic programs from early discovery and pre-planning through implementation.

  • Provides leadership for continuous improvement by identifying challenges, conducting gap analyses, making recommendations and implementing effectively.

  • Consults with teams to understand business problems to be solved by technical solution.

  • Provides continuous leadership keeping momentum and focus in the team.

  • Identifies, tracks, and reports meaningful metrics and assists in achieving performance goals

  • Coordinates to elicit, document, and track a common and complete understanding of project/initiative requirements.

  • Supports all areas of the business by developing expertise and assisting through consultation, research and analysis.

Partner Management

Understand the business need for each project and make on-going decisions based on what’s best for the organization. Challenge senior stakeholders on critical success factors. Oversees the management of partner performance and metrics reporting (SLAs and SLOs)


  • Works independently with minimal supervision and exercises independent judgment.

  • A results-oriented individual with a high degree of emotional intelligence and situational effectiveness.

  • Demonstrates solid interpersonal skills, a collaborative nature, and awareness of self and others.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Basic (Required)

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration or computer information systems, or applicable technology-related experience.

  • 8+ years of recent professional experience in the IT or software development industry.

  • 8+ years of experience working within organizations to manage change in a matrixed environment.

  • Manage multiple complex initiatives that span one or multiple parts of a business.

  • Experience managing partner resources to ensure critical business results are achieved.

  • Experience with structured project management practices including estimation, budgeting, resource allocation, scope management, managing change, risk management.

  • Demonstrable ability towards understanding and translating business drivers for technical solutions.

  • Proven, strong written and oral communication skills across all levels of an organization.

  • Ability to manage multiple demands without missing deadlines.

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills for addressing challenges that arise.

  • Ability to communicate and seek support for complex procedures or diverse information.

  • Ability to provide quality service by appropriate follow-through, urgency and persistence.

  • Strong teambuilding skills and teamwork orientation; able to coach, mentor and lead by example.


  • 8+ years of experience within a software development team.

  • Past experience working in ambiguous environment and collaborating across multiple areas in order to achieve a common business objectives.

  • Turn around any-size troubled project.

  • Mentor less-senior personnel.

  • Demonstrate decisiveness in resolving business problems, making decisions and identifying priorities.

  • Experience managing vendor resources.

  • 3+ years of experience with Agile or Kanban project management tools, including Snow and Jira.

  • Experience with leading industry PPM and reporting tools – MS Project.
