The VMware Engineering Services (VES) business unit ensures our internal and external customers enjoy a high-quality experience across the entire product portfolio. The VES Performance Engineering Team ensures the performance of all VMware products and solutions exceed customer expectations. The team defines performance standards, characterizes performance, and develops solutions to optimize performance and increase scalability. We work on platform, storage, networking, end user computing, management products, and hybrid cloud. The team is closely involved in design and architecture of products and solutions to ensure they are fundamentally designed for high performance and scalability. The team plays a critical role in taking products to market by generating performance highlights and deep technical papers to educate customers on sizing and performance best practices. Research is ingrained in every individual of the team. We invent new technologies that enable our products to scale to next generation hardware and applications.

Job Role and Responsibility

VMware is looking for a Staff Engineer to join the Enterprise and Outbound Performance team to drive work on key scalability and performance challenges facing virtual platforms on premise and in the cloud. Our goal is to ensure that the VMware virtualized software stack excels in performance and scalability when compared to other industry solutions.

As a performance engineer in this team, you'll develop a strong command for single host virtualization, hyper-converged infrastructure, and cloud technology as well as enterprise customer use cases. You'll work on optimizing the end-to-end performance at scale for each of these environments. This involves understanding and improving the performance of the hardware, hypervisor and application stack. You will work closely with passionate performance engineers and developers to improve performance, author blogs and whitepapers, and present technical best practices at academic and customer conferences.

  • Lead the team by setting strategy for analyzing performance across virtualization platforms

  • Design and deploy virtualized, HCI, and cloud environments to study performance

  • Develop and automate performance measurement and data analysis tools

  • Understand the products in depth to be able to identify bottlenecks in code/design/architecture

  • Implement or prototype optimization ideas

  • Understand key differences between virtualization platforms and conduct competitive performance analysis

  • Ensure VMware products have best-in-class performance in comparison to solutions from other vendors

  • Publish research papers and product performance technical white papers

  • Research next generation architectures for virtualized, HCI, and cloud scale performance

Required Skills

  • Degree in computer science or related engineering field

  • 10+ years of relevant professional experience

  • Deep knowledge and understanding of Operating Systems fundamentals, Linux, and Windows administration skills

  • Excellent analytical, debugging, and troubleshooting skill

  • Experience in performance benchmarking, analysis and optimization of distributed, multi-threaded applications in Java or C/C++ Solid understanding of CPU, memory, network, and storage hardware and software subsystems as they relate to performance

  • Proven ability to work well with others in a fast paced, iterative development environment

  • Excellent communication skills

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong understanding of system architecture, including processors, storage and networking

  • Expertise with application profiling tools such as Yourkit/Jprobe/xperf/zoom

  • Working knowledge of database tuning and administration
