Technical Writer Job Description
The Technical Communications team strives to deliver the highest quality end-user documentation to Thermo Fisher Scientific customers. The Technical Writer will create user guides and related instructional content for reagent kits, software, and instruments related to animal health products in the Genetic Sciences Division. They will be writing customer-facing technical content for regulated products (IVD, IVDD, IVDR, and other labels), working closely with regulatory authorities in the US, the EU, Asia, and other regions. The candidate must be an excellent writer who is detail oriented, passionate about clear and concise scientific communication, and able to build strong relationships with product development teams and other internal stakeholders to move projects along very tight timelines. Successful writers in our group are team players with a positive attitude and the desire for excellence. Candidates with experience in topic-based authoring, XML or HTML authoring, and DITA are preferred.
Create technical end-user documentation from information gathered from research scientists, product managers, engineers, software developers, regulatory analysts, and other business team members.
Analyze complex content from multiple sources and synthesize it into clear, coherent customer-focused instructions and workflows.
Organize content into topics and publications following DITA standards and department information models.
Regularly interact with subject experts and actively participate in project team meetings.
Proactively solicit input from other experts within the company as needed (e.g., technical support, field application specialists, legal).
Work collaboratively with other writers using the department's XML-based authoring tool and content management system.
Work with additional authoring tools (Word, FrameMaker, InDesign, and RoboHelp) as needed.
Manage multiple projects with multiple deliverables simultaneously.
Work with minimal supervision and manage time effectively.
Deliver under tight deadlines.
Identify and communicate risks to project deadlines in advance.
Adapt to changes in project priorities.
Estimate and schedule complex documentation projects.
Follow all processes, style guides, templates, and brand guidelines.
Manage documents within a document control system.
Identify and suggest improvements to processes and deliverables.
Lead departmental special projects as needed.
Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline. Advanced degree preferred.
Technical writing experience in a scientific environment or experience in the life sciences industry preferred.
Thorough understanding of technical/scientific content.
Ability to organize information logically.
Ability to write clearly, concisely, accurately, and quickly.
Keen attention to detail and high regard for quality.
Ability to quickly learn new processes and software tools.
Experience with topic-based authoring using DITA preferred.
Experience with XML authoring tools preferred.
Experience with HTML and CSS markup languages a plus.
Expertise in FrameMaker, InDesign, RoboHelp, or Word desirable.
Can effectively adapt structure, tone, and style to meet business needs.
Excellent communication skills.
Strong relationship management, project management, and critical thinking skills.
Advanced knowledge of relevant style guide(s) and best practices.
