Ethicon Inc., a member of Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices Companies, is currently recruiting for a Vice President, Research & Development for Visualization & Capital Equipment. This position is based in Cincinnati, OH, however alternative Medical Devices locations are Somerville, NJ, Sunnyvale, CA and Boston, MA.
The VP, R&D, is responsible for managing creation, operation & dissolution of cross-functional teams, focused to execute capital-heavy product acquisition & development projects in accordance with criteria chartered with Ethicon Leadership. The role will play a critical leadership position responsible for our capital-equipment portfolio geared towards a wide variety of surgical modalities (e.g. laparoscopic). Ensuring product development teams implement, support & deliver business results consistent with Ethicon business strategy.
The primary objectives of this role include:
Lead product development process from technological concept through product introduction by providing leadership & direction to multi-disciplined, cross-functional project teams.
Contribute to overall business decisions and innovation strategy as a core member of Platform Leadership Teams
Lead the project execution for multiple digitally oriented product offerings across the Ethicon portfolio from program initiation to post launch commercialization, ensuring that all business launch commitments are achieved.
Assess efficiency of capital equipment-oriented product development systems & process and develop & implement improvement plans.
Lead digital product collaborations across internal business units, including collaboratively defining deliverables, timelines, budget, and multi-generational plans for capital equipment.
Manage the cross-functional matrix, working with functional area leaders to identify Program resource and skill set gaps, secure required resources (internal and external), drive communication, risk management, mitigation, contingency planning and conflict resolution for the programs on an ongoing basis.
Foster teamwork, diversity, and inclusion within team, between teams and other groups.
Lead the capability strategy to train and upskill team members, including long-term plan to build and sustain emerging technical skillsets in software, systems, and computer engineering.
Develop overall product development plans & budgets with a focus on reducing time to market in execution.
Recommend cancellation & risk mitigation of projects that will not meet set objectives.
Define technical needs, filter and select external technology and contract manufacturing partners, and lead them to deliver critical technology and products.
A Masters’ degree in Engineering, systems, electrical, software or related field; Advanced Engineering Degree preferred (MA, PhD, MBA)
15+ years of progressive experience in new product development required; 10+ years experience in the medical devices industry preferred
10 years in a regulated industry involving complex systems (electrical, mechanical, software) such as aerospace, automotive, medical capital strongly preferred
10+ years management of large R&D organizations
5+ years in development of complex medical capital equipment products.
Visionary leadership, ability to envision the future state and mobilize teams to achieve that vision
Technical background in electromechanical, software and controls development from early concept to launch, process development, and manufacturing scale up
Track record of successfully bringing products from concept to market on schedule & within budget.
Management experience of cross-functional product development teams.
Strong people management and organizational development skills; ability to acquire and develop a strong & diverse talent pipeline that meets future organizational needs
Strong technical judgment, broad and deep knowledge of technology, both within medical devices and across other industries is required
Demonstrable track record of success in influencing and communicating with senior leadership and the ability to work within a global matrix environment is required.
Domestic and international travel is required up to 30% of the time
