Abbott Senior Staff Hardware Engineer in Burlington, Massachusetts

Senior Staff Hardware Engineer – CaridoMEMS Heart Failure Therapy Burlington, MA

As Senior Staff Hardware Engineer , at our Burlington location, you will play a key role in design and development of Abbott’s CardioMEMS pulmonary artery pressure monitoring system. You will have the opportunity to develop technology platforms that improve the lives of those suffering from heart failure and other cardiac diseases.

In this role, you will design hardware to support features that are included as part of new product definition and will design verification testing (DVT) protocols. Assignments may include collecting product design requirements and may proceed through the full life cycle of steps documenting, designing, testing and releasing products expected to meet high reliability hardware design standards. Assignments include capturing, analyzing, implementing and validating applicable product or hardware design concepts, requirements and designs.

This role will require you to apply your advanced knowledge of engineering and scientific principles toward the evaluation and solution of technical problems. You will initiates planning, organizing, performing, coordinating and/or directing of engineering work. You will also perform technical studies and consult on technical advancements.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Function as a central hardware engineering expert within and across business units for new product development of breakthrough R&D projects.

  • Perform system design of implantable devices. Select components, process, and foundries. Propose design alternatives.

  • Design hardware to support features that are contained in the product definition.

  • Develop hardware design specifications and circuit designs and is responsible for technology selection

  • Assist the product definition team with feature selection. Provide recommendations to management regarding tools and product architecture.

  • Lead design reviews; document and resolve issues.

  • Participates in and supports reviews held by other engineers on related projects and provides useful feedback.

  • Participates in and supports different test phase efforts.

  • Writes and updates requirement specifications for multiple systems.

  • Consults to project team on deliverables for feasibility, thoroughness, clarity, correctness and accuracy.

  • Pursues opportunities for patents; contributes to patent applications as appropriate

  • Evaluates and selects appropriate components and technologies.

  • Support all Company initiatives as identified by management and in support of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements.

  • Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments. Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.

  • Position may require up to 10% travel

Experience and Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical, Biomedical, or equivalent.

  • 10+ years of hardware design, development, or testing experience, including a comprehensive familiarity with manufacturing equipment/processes that is compatible with highly reliable electronic medical or similar devices.

  • Comprehensive ability to develop new design features as part of existing systems.

  • Qualified record of implementing new processes to existing hardware design and related systems.

  • Experience applying statistical techniques to inform design decisions (e.g. Design for Six Sigma, Design for Manufacturability).

Preferred Qualifications / Education

  • Medical Device industry experience strongly preferred.

  • Experience with implantable hardware.

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering, physics, mathematics or related field (advanced degree may substitute for some years of experience)

  • Advanced degree.

  • Strong history of cross-functional collaboration with other engineering disciplines (Mechanical, Manufacturing, etc.).

  • Experience working on joint technical forums/councils in the development of industry standards.

  • Demonstrated expert knowledge of sound design principles and practices

  • Extensive hands-on magnetics, and high voltage/ low voltage analog circuit design experience

  • Experience with EMC requirements and 60601-1-2 test methods

  • Experience in circuit and magnetic modeling and simulation methods

  • Experience leading cross-functional teams and initiatives to successful outcomes

  • Working knowledge of electromagnetic physics and analysis

  • Strong communication & presentation skills

  • Demonstrated expert knowledge of sound design principles and practices.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical device development process.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical device design controls (21 CFR Part 820) and project management.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of all applicable internal requirements and external regulations.

  • Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross-division business unit model preferred.
