Job-Specific Responsibilities:

The Huttenhower Lab in the Department of Biostatistics at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (, in partnership with the Broad Institute, is seeking a Software Developer to support the group's research software portfolio. This includes analysis methods implemented in R and Python generally, as well as the Microbiome Initiative Bioinformatics Center (MIBC) for analyses of the human microbiome in type 1 diabetes specifically for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

The successful candidate will be responsible for a combination of scientific software development (Python / R) and web development (Django / Nginx and HTML / CSS / Javascript). The MIBC broadly supports the computing requirements of the JDRF microbiome consortium, an approximately 10-laboratory group, including the Huttenhower laboratory, Broad Institute, and national and international research teams. The Scientific Software Developer's responsibilities include scientific software for back-end molecular data handling and web interfaces for the MIBC's online portal (

The successful candidate will thus work with the lab's research group, other MIBC scientific and software team members, the Harvard University Information Technology team (, and JDRF consortium members to maintain and expand our bioinformatics platform. Strong computational skills are required, although the candidate need not be deeply familiar with the relevant biological data types methods (for most data handling exist already as part of the lab or broader MIBC and can be adapted for portal-specific applications). The candidate should, though, be particularly fluent in Python, Javascript, and Linux environments, and ideally familiar with R and database management systems.
