AFFOA E-Textile System Designer in Cambridge, Massachusetts

Advanced Functional Fabrics of America, Inc. (AFFOA) is one of the Manufacturing USA Innovation Institutes. Headquartered in Cambridge, MA, AFFOA's mission is to rekindle the textiles industry in the United States by accelerating the pace of innovation in advanced textiles through R&D and by transitioning advanced fiber and fabric technologies into highly manufacturable soft systems for both commercial and defense use cases. AFFOA partners with its member companies including startups, universities, manufacturers, commercial industry and defense partners to bring advanced fiber technologies to market. We are looking for a E-Textile Design Engineer to design and develop solutions that encompass technologies such as sensors, actuators and conductors embedded into textiles, enabling revolutionary new system capabilities for commercial and defense applications. Working across our member companies, you will work to integrate advanced textile technologies into products that meet our customer needs and serve as a catalyst to propel US-based manufacturing in textiles. Requirements include: B.S. or M.S. in Textile Engineering or Industrial Design, or related field 5+ years of experience prototyping of soft good products. Direct industry experience is a strong plus. A drive to understand the state of the art in a broad range of multidisciplinary fields, including novel electronic materials and textiles. Knowledge of design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Rhino, Solidworks, etc. Skilled demonstration of the applied use of pattern making software such as Accumark Gerber, Lectra, Optitex, etc. Demonstrated understanding of electrical requirements and their translation to textiles and wearables. Experience with smart textile systems and concepts is a plus. Specific experience in the use of prototyping instruments for knitting, weaving and/or embroidery is a plus. "Maker" mentality with a broad range experience in soft goods products (i.e., cut and sew methods, lamination, bonding, 3D printing, etc.) Ability to conceptualize, design, fabricate and test advanced fabric materials for sensing applications Capability to work in a multidisciplinary team with Engineers, textile experts and other partners to develop and test prototypes. Ability to work with subject matter experts matter across industries including healthcare, consumer, industrial and defense to develop and test novel systems employing advanced fiber and textile technologies. Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to facilitate meetings, contribute to written proposals and research reports and make effective presentations. Proven time management skills with ability to establish clear priorities and manage multiple projects, ensuring deliverables are on time and on budget. Must be a US citizen or green card holder. This position is located at AFFOA headquarters in Cambridge with some work from home opportunities. Some travel may be required.
