Draper Laboratory is seeking talented and motivated individuals to tackle challenging engineering problems. As a Hardware Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the implementation and conception of novel hardware sensor solutions and integration of communication signals with applications to complex systems for various environments. You will design unique capabilities for a diverse set of applications in addition to supporting strategic business development. You will work in a fast-paced environment, collaborating in multi-disciplinary teams with opportunities to learn, grow, and contribute to a variety of projects in this area.
Applicants should possess solid skills designing novel sensor, communications, and/or measurement instrumentation with experience with rapid prototyping, testing, and implementation. They should also have a deep understanding of either optical sensing (focal plane arrays, optical systems, etc.) and/or wireless communications fundamentals and RF theory. Applicants will assist in the design, development, modeling and simulation, implementation, and evaluation, of optical and RF signals for transmission and reception.
Experience integrating communication and sensor signals with hardware (e.g. transceivers, amplifiers, filters, ADCs, etc.)
Design, test, integrate, and use sensors for the measurement of optical and/or RF signals
Understand optical and/or RF channels for different applications and environments
Specify architecture and requirements of special communication systems based on application
Modeling and simulating components of an optical or communications system
Perform laboratory experiments and evaluate fieldable prototypes
Support business development, write proposals, white papers, and technical documents
Deliver technical presentations to internal and external customers
BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Physics, or similar
Expertise with designing, testing, and implementing optical and/or RF sensors
Sensor integration and testing background, preferably with experience working with prototypes and field testing
High-level expertise with modeling and simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB, SolidWorks, etc.)
High-level expertise with C++ and Python
Ability to work on fast paced projects, guiding quick-turnaround experiments and rapid prototyping
Experience implementing fieldable prototypes and doing their testing and validation
Experience leading special communications systems design
Experience with programming and prototyping Software Defined Radios (SDRs)
- Ability to acquire Top Secret Level clearance
