Akamai Technologies, Inc. Hardware Systems Engineer - Office in Cambridge, Massachusetts

Our Infrastructure Engineering & Operations organization builds and maintains Akamai's Platform, one of the largest distributed platforms in the world. Our Hardware Engineering team is responsible for designing, qualifying, and validating servers destined for our growing network.

Partner with the best

You will be developing new hardware platforms that power Akamai's global CDN and Cloud services. You'll be at the forefront of our server development life cycle. From conception to manufacturing and deployment, you'll be delivering high-quality, reliable systems for both developers and customers.

As a Hardware Engineer II, you will be responsible for:

  • Designing, creating and realizing next-generation servers for Akamai's CDN and Cloud Compute platforms

  • Collaborating with industry partners and internal teams to design performant, efficient, and reliable servers.

  • Engaging with new computing and networking technology standards.

  • Specifying, validating, and hands-on troubleshooting of prototype next-gen computing hardware and firmware for new product introduction.

  • Driving resolutions to hardware failures in operational and manufacturing environments, including identification, diagnosis, impact analysis, resolution, and prevention

  • Designing and executing targeted tests to accurately reproduce and analyze system behaviors.

Do what you love

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Have 8 years of relevant experience and a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, or a related field

  • Be skilled in 3 of the following: Bash, Perl, C, SQL, Python, PKI, Linux, Networking. Proficient with source control.

  • Experience with the configuration, design, and validation of x86 based server hardware; related technologies, standards and protocols such as Ethernet, TCP/IP, PCIe, NVMe, DDR

  • Experience driving technical requirements with vendors, subcontractors, and manufacturers, with excellent communication and documentation skills. (OEM/ODM/JDM/CM)

  • Experience with benchmarking and performance optimization of CPUs, NICs, or hardware accelerators.

  • Be an independent, solution-driven mindset, adaptable to a fast-changing environment.

Compensation

Akamai is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The base salary for this position ranges from $106,600 - $221,400/year; a candidate’s salary is determined by various factors including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location. The compensation package may also include incentive compensation opportunities in the form of annual bonus or incentives, equity awards and an Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP).
