CRISPR Therapeutics Scientific Computing Engineer in Cambridge, Massachusetts

Position Summary

We are seeking a talented Scientific Computing Engineer to join the Genomics and Computational Biology Team to tackle challenging bioinformatics and software engineering problems. The successful candidate will work to scale and deploy the tools, algorithms, and pipelines required to support the development of new, transformative CRISPR/Cas9-based gene editing therapies.


  • Develop and maintain the underlying compute infrastructure for processing and analyzing large-scale genomic data

  • Work with research scientists to convert research prototypes into robust scientific software optimized for performance, scalability, and best coding practices

  • Develop and maintain bioinformatics software and pipelines

  • Train and guide bioinformatics engineers in tools, database architecture, software architecture, analysis methods, and pipelines

  • Ensure basic quality assurance of data and software generated by designing and implementing test methodologies

Minimum Qualifications

  • Degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Software Engineering, Computer Science or a relevant field with 2+ years of industry experience

  • Hands on experience with computational workflows and bioinformatic tools for next generation sequencing (e.g. bcl2fastq, BWA, samtools, GATK, IGV)

  • Proficiency developing software for Linux/Unix environments and shell scripting.

  • Technical familiarity with high performance computing or cloud computing environments (e.g. AWS, DNAnexus)

  • Proficiency with Python or R

  • Familiarity with development and management of complex software infrastructure

  • Demonstrated adherence to best practices in software engineering particularly version control and testing

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize effectively

  • Excellent verbal and written communication

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with web development frameworks (e.g. Django / Flask), front-ends (e.g. Angular.js / React) and relational databases (e.g. MySQL)

  • Project management experience

  • Experience with agile and scrum methodologies, sprint planning, and leading daily stand-up

  • Familiarity with LIMS and other sample and data tracking systems

  • Experience with DevOps tools (e.g. Docker, Jenkins, Puppet)
