Aurora Flight Sciences Corporation Senior Aircraft Loads Engineer in Cambridge, Massachusetts
Senior Aircraft Loads Engineer
Location: Cambridge, MA
Job Code: 1936
Aurora Flight Sciences is a world leader in the development of highly autonomous aircraft. Our mission is to apply autonomy and robotics to the development, production, and operation of advanced aircraft. We aim to change the way we travel.
We frequently achieve what others can’t due to a combination of experience, persistence, collaboration, and a culture of innovation. Projects are ambitious and risky. We apply breakthrough technologies to create a new state of the art, rather than advancing the old one.
This is your chance to make history with us. We are seeking experts and explorers across the lifecycle of vehicle development. Cross-disciplinary interests are strongly desired; we love people that combine world-class expertise with a diverse background and interesting hobbies.
We are currently seeking an experienced aircraft loads engineer to support a variety of aircraft development programs. The position requires a solid mathematical background, a detailed conceptual understanding of aircraft dynamics, a proven track record of leadership, and a strong attention to detail. The applicant is expected to have experience with static and dynamic loads derivation for aircraft. Aurora’s motto is “Fly Early, Fly Often” with rapid design cycles and early prototyping. Working closely with aerodynamicists, detailed designers, and analysts, the Senior Aircraft Loads Engineer will provide leadership and the load cases informing the aircraft development process.
Develop and/or interpret aerodynamic and ground loads based on aerodynamic and dynamic analysis.
Develop loads plan, loads cases, and required testing to meet certification requirements.
Implement loads database to be used by the structural design team.
Create loads environment map across the entire aircraft.
Leverage parameter exploration techniques to efficiently map the parameter space and create a loads and vibrations response surfaces.
Down-select to obtain critical load cases across the parameter space.
Validate loads via experimental data correlation.
Participate in the engineering review, approval, and release process
B.S. in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a relevant discipline.
10+ years of working experience in relevant industry including loads analysis for fixed-wing or rotorcraft.
Excellent problem solving and communication skills.
Track record of leading teams developing loads for different aircraft.
In-depth experience with multiple phases of certified aircraft development.
Solid understanding of aircraft aerodynamics and rigid body dynamics.
Hands-on experience working within aircraft certification program guidelines (FAA, Mil-Spec, EASA) including experimental and prototyping program type work.
Firm understanding of shear and bending moment diagrams.
Comfortable with analysis tools such as MATLAB and Excel.
Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident
Desired Experience for Senior Level:
Masters or PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related degree
Proficiency with CAD (e.g. CATIA)
Experience with leading loads testing to validate models and results.
Experience in validation of analysis results against other sources, such as testing
Experience of aerodynamic modeling (such as computational fluid dynamics) and/or finite element analysis (FEA)
- Must be able to support travel
