The Embedded & Communication Systems group is seeking a Senior Embedded Space Systems Engineer to apply systems-thinking approaches and advanced systems engineering methods to the development of embedded space system solutions. Leveraging Draper’s expertise in guidance navigation and control (GN&C), fault-tolerant avionics, human-systems technology, spacecraft mission management and embedded systems, the systems engineer must be able to support the delivery of unique, advanced technology solutions for customer needs of ever-increasing complexity with dynamic requirements and applications in support of Draper’s National Security and Space (NS&S) mission areas.

Responsibilities include:

System requirements development, capture, and management, system concept development and architecting, multi-disciplinary design optimization, trade space exploration, and detailed system design and verification.

The ideal candidate will employ skills to analyze and capture customer and stakeholder needs, understand and evaluate relevant technology options, and apply advanced decision-making strategies to develop innovative system solutions. The ability to communicate complex and abstract technical ideas to a broad profile of stakeholders is essential.


  • Knowledge of systems engineering methods, particularly in the application of these methods to complex system design, is strongly desired as is broad-based experience with various sensor types (both custom and COTS) and sensor-based system design.

  • Experience in space systems engineering or a related discipline, including, but not limited to requirements development, analysis and management; concept of operations and mission timeline development; guidance, navigation and control (GN&C) systems; fault-tolerant avionics, spacecraft mission management, and reliability assessment for human-rated spacecraft.

  • MS or PhD in electrical engineering, computer science/engineering, aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or systems engineering.

  • Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with engineers, management, and other stakeholders of all relevant disciplines are required. Flexibility to multi-task and adapt to changing technologies is a must.

  • Highly motivated, self-starter with willingness to learn and participate in a team environment.

Applicants selected will undergo a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Currently holding a Secret or TS security clearance is a plus.
