Microsoft Corporation Senior Hardware Performance Engineer - Azure Hardware ArchitectureGroup in Cambridge, Massachusetts

The Azure Hardware Architecture Group is seeking an experienced systems performance engineer to profile, characterize, and analyze datacenter workloads, and propose innovations in datacenter architecture, ranging from CPU, SoC, accelerators, memory subsystem, networking, system architecture, and hardware-software codesign. This engineer will drive performance/cost modeling and analysis to evaluate new technology integration and architecture opportunities for next generation cloud hardware platforms, as well as work with application partners to prepare cloud workloads for complex new hardware. We are a part of a highly capable and motivated cross-disciplinary team responsible for delivering cutting-edge, highly efficient solutions to power Microsoft’s next-gen datacenters and computing needs.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with software developers to analyze and document the operation of complex datacenter workloads.

  • Collaborate with hardware architects to understand new system tradeoffs and the analysis necessary to navigate the design space

  • Utilize external and internal tools to perform sensitivity studies, characterize, profile and analyze key cloud workloads.

  • Develop tools, scripts, analysis methods, etc. as needed to carry out robust and automated analysis.

  • Drive performance analysis and modeling to explore architecture choices.

  • Document and communicate findings to stakeholders.

  • Discover and invent the next generation computer architecture for the cloud at all levels of innovation to create a datacenter that is truly optimized (performance, power and cost) based on data-driven and deep understanding of Azure’s cloud critical workloads.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with architects in the Azure services team, various software development teams across Microsoft’s on-line properties, and internal and external hardware engineering teams working on silicon and systems architecture. The ideal candidate will have:

  • B.S. or advanced degree preferably in Computer Engineering or related field or equivalent experience (MS or Ph.D. desirable)

  • 5+ years of in computer architecture or engineering research and development, with demonstrated track record of success

  • Experience in workload analysis and performance modelling

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, analytical capabilities, and attention to detail

  • Excellent technical leadership, communication and collaboration skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in workload analysis, profiling, and characterization using application-level profiles and hardware performance counters.

  • Strong background in computer and systems architecture, with thorough understanding of system software (Hypervisor, OS, Drivers, Firmware) and its interaction with the hardware platform.

  • Knowledge of cloud systems/distributed computing concepts and related performance goals and challenges.
