Mathematica Senior Researcher, Equitable Evaluation in Cambridge, Massachusetts

Mathematica is uniquely positioned as a trusted equity-focused learning partner. Over 300 of our staff engage in an Equity Community of Practice to advance our existing evaluation approaches in service of equity-focused grantmaking and policymaking. This Community of Practice is focused on three goals: 1) internalizing an equity results process and identifying the culture change required to partner with foundations, grantees and government agencies; 2) building our capacity to continuously incorporate a set of equity principles into project work, staffing and leadership more broadly; and 3) identifying partnerships and collaborations across internal teams and externally for achieving the vision and commitment to equity.
In an effort to advance this work in partnership with our clients, we are looking for a senior staff member who is passionate about improving the well-being of marginalized or under-served communities to lead Human Services research and evaluation, program improvement, and technical assistance projects for foundations, non-profits, and public agencies. This work would include projects focused on a variety of Human Service program and policy areas including education, employment, early childhood, family support, and nutrition.
In particular, we seek someone with expertise in equitable evaluation and culturally responsive approaches who can work closely with clients and project teams to apply an equity lens. This includes experience in:
- Centering equity principles when engaging stakeholders and communities and co-creating measurement, learning, and evaluation throughout the design, implementation, analysis, and dissemination phases of a project.
- Elevating and amplifying the values, voices and validity of those most impacted by research.
- Identifying and analyzing how institutional or other factors contribute to disparities and examining strategies to improve outcomes of historically marginalized communities
The following projects illustrate the type of work we have been doing recently:
- Facilitating grantee communities of practice designed to advance learning and the objectives of a foundation’s grantmaking programs
- Conducting studies of initiatives designed to address root causes of educational and other disparities
- Providing engaging technical assistance to states and districts to help them implement culturally responsive pedagogies and practices
- Conducting rapid-cycle learning activities for stakeholders involved in two generation programs that combine adult training and early childhood programs and are informed by discussions with those impacted by the programs
- Conducting studies in tribal communities or other marginalized groups that engage community representatives on study approaches
Duties may include:
- Bringing an equity focused lens to research and program improvement projects
- Applying principles of equitable evaluation and incorporating diverse stakeholder, participant, and community voices to the design, data collection, analysis, and reporting in ways that contextualize findings
- Providing thought leadership in the area of equitable evaluation and culturally responsive methods
- Building partnerships and engaging with clients to understand the challenges they face and working collaboratively with them to develop innovative solutions, particularly as they relate to equity
- Leading interdisciplinary teams to conduct research, program improvement, and technical assistance projects
- Contributing to business development and proposals for new projects for foundations , non-profits, and state or local agencies
- Working collaboratively with grantees and other practitioners to develop, implement, or test strategies for improving program performance and services in equitable ways
- Overseeing project budgets, schedules, and staffing to ensure high-quality project delivery
- Communicating with program/project officers and stakeholders as appropriate on the financial status of projects, design and technical issues, and project reports and presentations
Contributing to the professional development of other Mathematica staff, particularly around equitable evaluation practices
- Position Requirements*:
Master’s degree or a combination of equivalent education and work experience
- Extensive knowledge of how to bring an equity lens to work with foundations, non-profits, or state/local Human Service programs in education, early childhood, employment, and/or family support
- Ten or more years of experience working with or evaluating Human Service programs (including performance measurement, training and capacity building, evaluation and learning, or strategy setting); at least 5 years of experience leading work in equitable evaluation and culturally responsive approaches
- Experience interacting with grantees or other program practitioners through such as activities as training and technical assistance, program or curriculum development, continuous quality improvement, or experience facilitating trainings for large groups
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including experience communicating project priorities, learning questions, and findings in non-technical language to program practitioners, agency staff, and program funders
- Strong interpersonal skills, including a demonstrated ability to deal tactfully and diplomatically with clients, community members, project teams, and other external stakeholders
- Evidence of successful business development activities with foundations and/or non-profit or public agencies

This position offers an anticipated annual base salary range of $120,000-$180,000. This position may be eligible for a discretionary bonus based on company and individual performance.
