The Senior Director will be a nimble and flexible leader comfortable working in a dynamic high energy environment, able to both set strategy and adjust priorities and projects as needed, while clearly communicating with staff and supporting their success and development. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, thorough, and communicative - and possess proficient operations and project management skills to ensure repeated follow through with high standards on a range of projects and initiatives.

The Senior Director will be a highly strategic organization and culture builder. They will identify connection points within and outside of the institution to further advance the visibility and the work of the center and its affiliated faculty, and the development of key partnerships. The Senior Director will be politically astute, with a high level of emotional intelligence, sound judgement, and a commitment to excellence.

Engaging with a wide range of constituents, including faculty, staff, funders, and partners will require outstanding communication skills and the ability to operate with the highest level of diplomacy. This person is confident, compassionate, takes pride and joy in work that elevates the success of the broader organization, and often plays a role that supports others from behind the scenes.

  • Faculty Affiliates : Support and facilitate collaboration among the center’s 50 faculty affiliates from 9 schools across the University, fostering a sense of community building and connection. Oversee the strategy of engagement and communication with affiliates; facilitate connections around areas of overlapping research, interest, and programming to further the work of the center.

  • Event Strategy : Develop strategy, standards and calendar for on-campus and virtual events, roundtables, speaker series, study groups, seminars, open houses and more. Play a leading role in ensuring all offerings are managed and delivered with excellence.

  • Fellows, Delegations, and Visitors . Organizing and hosting visiting fellows, visiting delegations and dignitaries – setting agenda, liaising with partners across the university, and managing follow up.

    Global Learning Collaborations and Community

  • Knowledge Transfer : Lead the effort and strategy to help peer institutions and other organizations supporting cities leverage the center and Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative (https://www.cityleadership.harvard.edu/) ’s assets. Transfer knowledge to peer organizations, and share Bloomberg Harvard practices, curriculum, and research.

  • Global Learning Community : Forge collaborations with centers, institutions, and entities within and beyond Harvard to further the center’s mission. Find opportunities to bring learnings back to our organization to influence our approach.

  • Annual Academic Conference : Oversee development of the first annual academic conference convening scholars working on management, leadership, and governance in cities. The conference is planned for 2025.

  • Collaboration Development . Lead and/or support exploratory conversations with other organizations and leaders concentrating on city leadership, governance, and management.

    Advisor to the Faculty Director

  • Strategy advisement : Provide strategic support and analysis to the faculty director in managing external relations and strategic planning; act as a strategic thought partner to center leadership; effectively plan and manage projects; advise on internal and external projects, meetings, convenings and programs.

  • Administrative leadership . Oversee the office of the faculty director, including the work of the Senior Executive Associate, to manage information flow, oversee development of agendas and briefing materials. Develop and implement systems, tools, and reporting mechanisms to manage and monitor the complex responsibilities, projects, and initiatives of the center and tracks performance to goals. Develop and implement process improvements.

The Bloomberg Center for Cities at Harvard University seeks a thoughtful, forward looking, and results driven program leader to serve as the Senior Director for Collaborations. The Senior Director plays an integral role in growing the center’s impact across Harvard and around the world. Reporting to the Executive Director and working closely with the faculty Director, they will build and nurture a growing community of scholars, students, and practitioners. The Senior Director will be responsible for the planning, development, oversight, and execution of the center-wide strategy for developing collaborations and an energized community across Harvard University and beyond. Leading a team of five direct reports, the Senior Director will be responsible for organizing activities that generate, advance, and exchange research, ideas, and resources.

In concert with the faculty Director and the Executive Director, the Senior Director for Collaborations plays a central role in increasing the vitality, community, and visibility of the Bloomberg Center for Cities, forging critical partnerships, and implementing vision and strategy for the work of the center. The Senior Director will manage external and internal relations, oversee the office of the faculty Director, and play a key role in ensuring that priority projects and commitments are delivered with high standards. The Senior Director will serve as a primary liaison for the center’s faculty affiliates and fellows, fostering key connections and engagement with the work of the center, practice, and external partners, including other leading academic institutions globally as part of a community of learning that helps city leaders around the world. The Senior Director will steward events and programs, including a new annual academic conference. The Senior Director will have four direct reports in their purview.
