Job Title: FPGA Firmware Development

Location : Lexington, MA

Duration: 36 Months and 40 hours per week

Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements to obtain a Security Clearance for access to classified information. An Active Secret Clearance is desired.


Our client’s Group requires subcontractor services for an engineer with skills in Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) firmware development. This position supports VHDL work across a variety of communications related programs and efforts.

Position Scope/Job Functions

The engineer will perform two primary functions in support of technical staff: 1) write VHDL code to specifications provided by Staff developing and maintaining satellite terminals and data collection systems and 2) provide support to the staff to resolve issues identified during the integration and testing process. These activities are critical to the success of development efforts on multiple ongoing programs.

Skills: Required

The candidate will develop customized VHDL code which must execute advanced signal processing algorithms at rates beyond those of standard commercial practices. This means the VHDL developer must be intimately familiar with the architectures and tools used for code development. The tools used by Group include the ModelSim (a VHDL Verilog simulator), ISE (a synthesis tool for Xilinx FPGAs), Quartus (an FPGA synthesis tool for Altera FPGAs), and Synopsis Simplify (a synthesis tool for other FPGAs). The candidate is preferred to have an intimate knowledge with this toolset as well as the architectural requirements needed to meet DoD’s unique communications program objectives.

Demonstration of strong communication skills, both oral and written, is required. The candidate must be willing to work in a team environment. Experience with communication theory and communication system design will be considered favorably.

The candidate must also work well in a team environment. The terminal development is done by a team of people. These include hardware developers, RF engineers, mechanical designers, and others. The software development, therefore, is not performed in isolation. Instead the developer must work side-by-side with others on the group to successfully develop the terminal.

Education/Professional Certifications/Substituting Off-Set

PhD plus 5 years minimum experience, or MS plus 8 years minimum experience
