MIT Lincoln Laboratory Real-Time Embedded Processing Architect-Technical Staff in Lexington, Massachusetts

The Embedded and Open Systems Group conducts research to design, develop, and deploy next generation high-performance real-time embedded processing systems for use on air, ground, and sea-based platforms located at the tactical edge. We design these systems using diverse computational elements in support of applications including sensing, communications, and artificial intelligence. Hardware, software, mathematical, and security expertise are blended to optimize these low-power solutions. We succeed by participating in all program phases including system analysis, architecture definition, design, prototyping, field testing, and ultimately the transfer of our technology to operational systems.

Position Description

We are looking for talented engineers who can lead research efforts to create advanced low-power, real-time embedded systems that integrate custom and commercial hardware, digital signal processing, artificial intelligence, and software to meet challenging operational requirements. In this position you will lead one or more technical teams requiring active collaboration with your colleagues to optimize solutions and implement them in laboratory and deployed systems. We need our engineers to be versatile, innovative, display leadership qualities, and help drive high-performing multi-disciplinary teams to produce world-class results.

Take ownership of our future technology by:

  • Leading the execution of research, design, development, prototyping, deployment, and transition of next-generation tactical edge, low-power embedded processing systems

  • Evaluating system-level requirements by working with technical leaders within MIT Lincoln Laboratory and across the broader DoD community

  • Defining and implementing advanced real-time system architectures to meet challenging mission-driven size, weight, and power requirements using advanced hardware/software/algorithm co-design approaches

  • Working with group management to define new technology thrusts, program development opportunities, and long-term technical strategic plans

  • Leading multi-disciplinary technical teams to realize, evaluate, and iteratively refine complex real-time system prototypes

  • Participating in the implementation and demonstration of advanced hardware/software systems for use within MIT Lincoln Laboratory and across the broader Department of Defense R&D and operational communities

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields. In lieu of a Doctoral degree, a Master’s degree with a minimum of 5 years of directly related experience will be considered.

  • Proven experience and background in computer architecture, digital design, embedded software development, and/or digital signal processing

  • Development experience with processing technologies such as ASICs, FPGAs, GPUs, microprocessors

  • Ability to integrate real-time processors within larger sensor signal processing systems

  • Proven experience with multiple high-level programming languages such as Matlab, Python, or C/C+

    • Demonstrated experience with real-time digital signal processing and/or linear algebra techniques and their mapping to advanced computational elements
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to perform in a multi-disciplinary technical team environment, across functions, and with government sponsors and industry partners

  • Ability to develop innovative concepts for new program development

  • Highly effective communications skills within technical and non-technical environments

  • Able to obtain and maintain a government (DoD) security clearance

  • U.S. Citizenship required

You will stand out if you also have:

  • Experience with DoD radar, electronic warfare, or RF communications systems

  • Experience with artificial intelligence/machine learning techniques and their computational acceleration

  • Experience with hardware design including at least one Hardware Description Language (VHDL or Verilog)

  • Proven track record of innovation including peer-reviewed papers and/or patents

  • Proven program proposal development experience

  • Experience participating in multi-disciplinary technical project teams

  • Deep understanding of digital signal processing and linear algebra

  • Experience with industry standard design tools

  • Experience with multiple prototyping tools/languages/operating systems

  • Experience with heterogeneous processing, high-speed I/O

  • Experience with CUDA, Tensorflow, Open CL, or Xilinx HLS

  • Current in scope Secret or Top-Secret level DoD security clearance
