The Team

QuEST has a track record of scaling services for new customers. We are leveraging that expertise to build a new FPGA engineering team for one of the largest defense contractors in the country. As the leader of this team, you will be on the front lines helping establish the next big account for QuEST. Experienced managers in Delivery will be supporting you and the new team as we launch our unique Engineering Services model to help them deliver top notch aerospace and defense products.

The Role

We are seeking a full time Software/Firmware Engineering Program Manager who will guide a team to design, develop, implement, and verify software and firmware solutions as required to meet the needs of our customers and achieve business goals. This includes FPGA design, firmware development, and other software development projects. Software/firmware development would be focused on applications related to aerospace & defense: such as satellite communications, high-speed video processing, associated software applications, and fleet sustainment. You will lead a team as part of a hybrid Agile development system, exercising autonomy as a unified group. Your team will include other software/firmware design engineers & architects to define requirements, determine priorities, and ensure the product(s) complies with requirements. You may at times be involved with multiple projects across all phases of development, and as a result, you can expect plenty of variety and a well-rounded workload.

One of the most critical aspects to the role is ability to adapt to changing requirements and priorities, collaborate with teammates and customers, and communicate effectively with QuEST and customer stakeholders. Successful candidates will be proactive in overcoming obstacles, providing answers to questions, keeping the process moving, and always looking for ways to improve, and communicating clearly and often to all stakeholders within the customer and QuEST.

Potential Job Functions

  • Manage and develop a customer-focused program of firmware/software design engineers with a wide range of experience and expertise for satellite and communications technology applications

  • Build and manage customer relationships to ensure requirements are well defined and the team’s priorities and task load are clear

  • Follow all QuEST and customer policies and procedures to ensure proper employee performance and development (metrics, performance reviews, training plans, etc.)

  • Develop innovative ideas and productivity improvements to improve cost on customer products and team deliverables

  • Monitor and improve program health governance structure

  • Manage teams across the software/firmware/hardware development lifecycle, including: requirements generation, architecture development, design, verification, and implementation support

  • Lead team in analysis and resolution of any bugs or code deficiencies

  • Interact with customers/users and transpose requirements into technical designs

  • Ensure design documents, project documentation, release documents, and technical procedural documentation are all completed for the team to operate smoothly

  • Work within budgetary and schedule constraints

  • Lead effectively within, and participate in, a Scrum/Agile working environment

  • Interface with other QuEST departments to achieve cross functional goals


The successful candidate is detail oriented and highly collaborative. There will be a significant amount of interaction with the customer’s teams. Listening to the customer’s issues and offering proactive solutions is critical to building a strong relationship with this new customer.

  • Must hold a minimum BS degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a related degree, and 15+ years of software development leadership experience

  • Experience in VHDL-based RTL and functional design, analysis, and verification.

  • 15+ years of FPGA or hardware/firmware development experience

  • 5+ years technical program management experience, including managing direct reports

  • Experience with software/firmware development in an Agile DevSecOps and Continuous Integration development environment

  • Experience with FPGA and CPLD devices and development tools from Xilinx, Altera, and/or Lattice.

  • The ability to develop architectural approaches to meet written requirements.

  • Experience performing hardware/software/FPGA integration in a laboratory environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new methods, techniques, and approaches

  • Demonstrated communication skills

  • Experience with Agile and continuous development related tools such as: JIRA, Jenkins

  • Work well in a team oriented, collaborative environment

  • Are meticulously detail oriented

  • US Citizen required due to nature of work

  • Preferred:

  • US Security Clearance holder preferred

  • Proficiency with Modelsim and/or QuestaSim

  • Experience with Verilog and/or System Verilog for design verification

  • Experience incorporating third party IP into FPGA designs, including PCIe and Ethernet interfaces.

  • Experience using DOORS for requirements capture and flow-down.

  • Experience with configuration control tools such as Git or Clearcase.

Travel: Some travel to customer sites may be required for program reviews
