The mission of Legal Operations at Cengage Group is to ensure efficient delivery of legal services, while also enabling Legal initiatives and overall strategic vision. LegalOps helps to unlock additional capacity across the department through technology, process, and resource management while also prioritizing cost containment.

The Manager, Contract Operations will lead the Contract-Ops team currently responsible for the enterprise contract warehouse, including routing documents for electronic signature. This role will be the business owner for the current contract management solution and will act as the primary point of collaboration between Legal and Technology during the planning and implementation of a comprehensive contract lifecycle solution. The Manager, Contract Operations will also work closely with the Sr. Director, Legal Operations and other senior leaders within the Legal team in order to develop and implement the strategic vision for the future of the ContractOps team.

Responsibilities / Scope

  • Be responsible for and lead the team supporting the current contract management processes, including searching the contracts warehouse, routing contracts for electronic signature, and uploading/meta-data tagging of fully carried out contracts into the tool

  • Provide training on the contracts management system, and associated processes and workflows, to new users.

  • Partner with current users of the contracts system, stakeholders, Legal team colleagues, and Global Technology Solutions (GTS) to establish and implement standardized contract management processes and workflows

  • Assist, in partnership with Legal’s Commercial team and members of GTS, with the development and creation of contracting workflows, including template selection and document assembly, approvals, critical issues, etc.

  • Partner with Legal stakeholders and others across the organization to define and build and maintain metadata models for the most common contract types.

  • Collaborate with the Commercial team and other members of Legal to identify other workstreams that can be brought into ContractOps and streamlined in order to create capacity on the Commercial team and increase efficiency and transparency.

  • In partnership with the Manager, Legal Operations, lead efforts to identify, track and share key performance indicators around the contracting lifecycle process, in support of Legal’s department-wide metrics program.

  • Work with the Sr. Director, Legal Operations and other senior leaders within Legal to define and implement the strategic vision for the ContractOps team.

Required Skills / Experience

  • BA/BS required

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in contracts management or other related field; at least 2 years’ experience leading a team of direct reports

  • Knowledge of the Legal industry, in particular enterprise contracting processes and contract lifecycle workflows

  • Ability to understand and apply legal guidelines as well as understand product content licensing and contract language

  • Customer Service approach and collaboration skills; ability to interpret and translate information to the appropriate team(s)

  • High level of comfort with technology, and ability to quickly learn new tools and applications

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; comfort interacting with peers and leaders within the legal department

  • Proactive, “self-starter” approach to identifying problems and creating solutions

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel), Smartsheet, and other Contract management tools.
