Vice President, Total Rewards

Primary Purpose

The Vice President of Total Rewards is responsible for developing and implementing Total Rewards philosophy/strategy that will drive attraction, engagement and overall performance of employees, and will align with the company’s goals, competitive practices and talent strategy. Overall duties include the design, composition and administration of Bright Horizons’ domestic compensation & benefit programs, policies and processes.



  • Successfully deliver total rewards programs that our employees understand and value and that enables us to achieve our business objectives.

  • Take a creative approach, grounded in data and considering our varied employee population, and in collaboration with executive leadership, to build, implement, and refine our total rewards philosophy and programs.

  • Develop change management, implementation and communication strategies

  • Pursue industry leading and progressive total rewards programs; regularly monitor external trends to proactively make recommendations to adjust our total reward programs to stay competitive in the market while balancing our top-line and bottom line objectives

  • Establish and measure key program metrics to understand the effectiveness of our total rewards strategy/philosophy, and to guide continuous improvement

  • In partnership with the CEO, CFO and CPIO, define and execute our Executive compensation philosophy and programs including the oversight and administration of the Bright Horizons Equity Plan

Team/Key Stakeholders

  • Lead, manage and develop the Total Rewards team by continuously and effectively coaching and developing each team member.

  • Effectively partner with HR Leadership Team to communicate and help ensure an optimal user experience of broad HR programs.

  • Develop deep relationships with leaders across the HR function and the broader organization, including international total rewards counterparts

  • Coordinate closely with other executive staff to incorporate feedback and information about current compensation & benefit plans and user experience.

Day to Day

  • Ensure operational excellence of the annual benefits renewal process and year-end compensation planning process.

  • Manage all compensation programs and practices, including the design, development and maintenance of job levels, base salary ranges, short & long-term incentive plans design (including sales bonuses, contact center, operations, and corporate bonus plans)

  • Ensure equitable pay practices, internal equity, external competitiveness, and legal compliance through audits, legal and SEC reporting and personal interactions with leaders to administer programs that are compliant with company policies and government regulations.

  • Conduct job evaluations, analyze job responsibilities, activities, duties, requirements and organizational structure and recommend internal job placement in the appropriate level, title and FLSA classification.

  • Lead annual strategic planning, in partnership with Finance, on company-wide rewards programs and budgets.

  • Manage total rewards budget, provide reports and business insights, and negotiate with outside vendors or suppliers to ensure competitive pricing and on-time deliveries.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or related field required; Master’s preferred

  • 15+ years of experience in Human Resources (with at least 7 years leading Total Rewards function) with significant demonstrated success building and launching a spectrum of broad-based, innovative total rewards programs

  • Deep knowledge and understanding of compensation and benefits practices and systems gained through past practical application

  • Experience managing executive compensation design, administration and governance

  • Well honed change, project and program management skills; delivers on-time and budget

  • High-level strategic thinker, capable of partnering with senior leaders and capable of being a hands-on manager and “doer”

  • Strong relationship build genuine relationships with people at all levels of an organization

  • Strong analytical skills and experience with short term and long term budgeting

  • Maintain a deep, strategic knowledge of the current total rewards landscape, particularly trends and contemporary developments

  • Self-starter and highly organized/ ability to work independently and exercise sound business judgment.

  • Strong leadership presence with exceptional presentation and relationship-building skills.

  • Experience with large volume nonexempt population (10,000+)

  • Public company experience
