The VVS Global Engineering team is passionate about continuous improvement and seeking to support greater deployment of PPI (Practical Process Improvement) across technical business processes to drive better efficiency, reliability, and execution.

This role is based in Massachusetts, either in our Cambridge, Lexington, or Plainville site, but time may be spent at all VVS facilities including up to 10% travel to the Alachua, FL facility or other locations.

How will you make an impact?

The Engineering PPI Manager will be a member of the VVS Global Engineering team, reporting to the head of the Engineering Business Management group. The Engineering PPI Manager is responsible for the implementation of Thermo Fisher Scientific's Continuous Improvement Business System (PPI). This role works closely with engineering, operational and business leadership to establish and mature the Lean Management System and other coaching tools to facilitate cultural and results-driven transformation. This position combines project management, facilitation, leadership and continuous improvement skills for the development of standards, best practices, and performance improvements for the organization.

What will you do?

  • Work with cross-functional teams to streamline engineering processes to improve the customer experience, ensure profitable growth and increase efficiency in day-to-day and long-range engineering initiatives.

  • Identify, quantify financial opportunities for improvement and drive implementation.

  • Diplomatically cultivate an action-based culture of continuous improvement to improve KPIs, in the areas of delivery, planning, finance, people and quality. Act as a change agent and change leader.

  • Provide support to develop lean expertise and capability within the organization at all levels.

  • Educate and mentor cross functional project teams in the PPI Business system to deliver results.

  • Improve the decision-making model and problem-solving capabilities within high performance teams to increase autonomy and the pace of change. Promote proactive, data driven decision-making.

  • Participate in the financial quantification of saving for each PPI project, data capture pre- and post- improvements, and reporting out on success criteria.

  • Work with the expanded team to continuously develop and promote the Business System further.


  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, operations or business, with evidence of operational, leadership, or relevant professional experience.


  • A Lean Expert with extensive experience and a 'hands-on' track record of implementing successful TPS-based business systems including elements such as:

  • Lean Leadership (Daily Management, Leader Standard Work, and Gemba Walks)

  • Strategy Deployment and Value-stream mapping

  • Kaizen events on standard work, cell design, process and product 3P, Value-Analysis/Value Engineering, error-proofing, material flow, Heijunka, and Kanban.

  • Expertise in problem-solving utilizing a formal program/process

  • Proven track record of identifying and delivering year-over-year results using metric-driven problem solving.

  • Proven track record for developing, training, and coaching teams.

  • Self-directed leader with a proven ability to manage/influence across and up into the organization without direct reporting responsibility.

  • Proven ability to lead programs/projects/teams to a successful conclusion through superior presentation and teaching skills.

  • Experience in the biotech engineering/manufacturing environment is a big plus.

  • Able to drive strategic thinking and continuous improvement in both engineering and operational areas, including connecting the cross-functional resources to remove waste along the extended value streams.

  • A holistic thinker who can look enterprise-wide to integrate and streamline systems for optimal benefit.

  • Great communicator, including solid written, oral and presentation-giving skills.

  • High ethical standards to support a professional business code of conduct.
