RedHat Principal Software Engineer in Remote, Massachusetts

Job summary

The Red Hat Office of the CTO Networking team is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to work in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment. In this role, you will serve as a key member of our engineering team working on forward-looking open source networking technologies, and to help set the technical direction for networking at Red Hat. You will work on projects to identify, evaluate, and develop emerging networking technologies intended to enhance the Red Hat portfolio of products and services. If these projects are successful, you will work closely with product teams to transition the new technologies into production. In addition to working with others on the CTO Networking team and downstream product teams, you will also work closely with upstream communities, partners, and customers. We are open to location for the right experience.

Primary job responsibilities

  • Work with product teams, community members, partners, and customers to identify challenges in the networking space and design, implement, and champion solutions for those challenges

  • Work independently and/or with other engineers on the team to design and implement support for future-looking networking technologies and PoCs

  • Advocate internally for technology development and support needed for strategic next-generation offerings

  • Work with Red Hat product engineering groups to integrate emerging technologies into the Red Hat product portfolio.

  • Mentor junior level team members

  • Contribute to the success of the team by sharing your work and expertise with the team

  • Contribute to open source software projects and initiatives through code and leadership

  • Attend relevant conferences representing Red Hat and the projects you are part of

Required skills

  • 8-10+ years of industry experience in networking software and product design & development

  • Deep technical understanding of one or more area of software defined networking

  • Expert in one or more programming languages such as C, C++, or Golang, and an ability and willingness to become proficient with new languages if needed.

  • Broad experience with and understanding of multiple of the following:

  • Software Defined Networking (SDN)

  • Network Functions Virtualization (NFV)

  • Linux Kernel Networking

  • Routing/Switching Software & Protocols

  • Virtualization

  • Red Hat OpenShift &/or Kubernetes

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux

  • OpenStack

  • Ability to work both independently and on small teams in a globally distributed environment

  • Enjoys working in a fast-paced environment; Ability to quickly learn and understand new technologies; comfortable context switching between projects

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to directly interact with product teams, community members, partners, and customers.

  • Be comfortable working closely with engineers from a wide variety of Red Hat’s product teams and open source communities

  • Experience participating in, contributing to, and/or leading open source software projects, industry forums, and working groups

  • Be comfortable giving presentations on emerging technologies both internally and externally at open source and other conferences.
