MassMutual is seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional to join the Enterprise Risk Management area. Responsibilities include identifying and overseeing operational risks inherent across the MassMutual enterprise. The ideal candidate will employ models to create financial analysis that drives decisions on risks taken by the firm. This position requires the ability to “think outside the box” identify emerging risks and help the lines of business implement strategies to mitigate them.


  • Operational Risk Assessment

  • Liaise with the business and corporate areas and subsidiaries to identify, assess, and suggest appropriate governance and mitigating strategies for operational risks

  • Work with operational risk contacts to enhance program to identify inherent and residuals risks and validate/document the appropriateness of controls

  • Manage operational risk appetite program

  • Facilitate mitigation efforts across operational risk programs

  • Risk reporting to senior management, chief risk officer, Enterprise Risk Committee and Board of Directors. Reporting includes key risk indicators, top operational risk identification, root cause analysis, results of economic capital and risk appetite, and emerging operational risks

  • Recommend and drive changes to achieve expected results, while balancing cost and benefits

  • Review and enhance Key Risk Indicators and existing processes

  • Participate on cross-functional committees to help mature processes and ensure incorporation of operational risk considerations into business decisions. Take leadership role to resolve risk conflicts, when needed

  • Chair Operational Risk Committee meetings, ensure Committee Charter requirements are met, facilitate Charter updates as appropriate

  • Oversee aggregate risk acceptance program ensuring risk acceptances are quantified, aggregated, and managed appropriately

  • Design and lead training and education of those charged with managing operational risk as well as awareness to middle management and front line employees

  • Risk Modeling

  • Oversee Operational Risk Economic Capital model to ensure completeness and appropriateness of projections and on-time delivery of results

  • Ensure that sub-models adequately represent risks while balancing precision and time-to-build. Suggest alternative modeling strategy as need

  • Recommend modeling solutions and techniques to enhance understanding of risk-reward trade-offs

  • Support, or where appropriate lead, operational risk assessment and modeling efforts across the enterprise

  • Responsible for annual operational risk appetite stress modeling

  • Document and maintenance of models per the corporate modeling governance policy

  • Special projects.

  • Lead or contribute to special projects as needed including M&A activity, rating agency, risk appetite, or other reporting projects

  • Represent MassMutual at operational risk peer conferences and working groups

  • Perform periodic Risk Maturity Assessments, identify target maturity, gaps and mitigations

  • Teamwork

  • Work closely with others to help complete projects

  • Facilitate consistency of adoption of Operational Risk practices across the enterprise business units and subsidiaries

  • Lead continuous process improvements


  • 10+ years of relevant operational and risk related work experience

  • Experience leading and driving solutions involving multiple layers of management

  • Deals with ambiguity and complexity; willingness to explore multiple solutions to a problem

  • Understanding of economic, statutory and GAAP implications of risks and mitigations

  • Familiarity with complexities found in larger insurance and asset management companies

  • Experience with modeling operational risks to quantify economic capital and less severe stresses and impacts of potential mitigations

  • Highly effective critical thinker that can apply information from disparate sources to our operations and identify the key risks and issues for management action

  • Effective communicator, both written and verbal, comfort with presenting to all levels of the organization

  • Strong leadership skills. Willingness to take on lead role in ambiguous situations or for activities not directly associated with well-defined operational risk responsibilities

  • Strong matrix management skills. Ability to manage multiple projects across the enterprise

  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to work with others and lead risk-related discussions

  • Bachelor's degree required

  • Authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future
